Cannabis also commonly known as marijuana is a product that comes from the cannabis plant. Marijuana is mostly used as a psychoactive drug and as medicine although the cannabis plant does have many other uses. Marijuana although legal in 20 states and the District of Columbia for medical purposes and 2 states for medical and recreational purposes is still federally illegal and is considered by the United States a scheduled 1 drug. Marijuana consumption as a medicinal drug is a much debated topic with both supporters and non-supporters trying to influence law makers in order to fit their agenda. This is very important because as we learn more about the medicinal use of marijuana the laws preventing the use of medicinal marijuana are sure to change in the next few years. This will also lead to more research on the drug. The lack of research is one of the main reasons why there are still laws against the use of medicinal marijuana in some states and federally. More research will lead to better laws in regards to the consumption of medicinal marijuana. The primary effects of marijuana are caused by chemical components in the plant. These chemical components include cannabinoids like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), as well as at least 84 other cannabinoids. The most prevalent chemical component in marijuana is THC which is attributed to the high you acquire when you intake marijuana. THC and other cannabinoids are presumed to have positive effects on the treatment of some diseases. To understand how cannabinoids affect the brain you need to understand how the parts of the Brain that are affected by cannabinoids work. The brain has neurons which process information with the help of naturally occurring chemicals in the body which are called neurotransmitters.
