Should Marijuana be a Legalized Drug?
Would you try marijuana if it was legalized in Iowa? Have you ever wondered how dangerous it could be of the human mental structure? There is nothing safe in using cannabis and there have always been consequences for the use of this dangerous drug It may make you feel good temporarily, but it can harm and affect your life. Marijuana should never be legalized in Iowa because of its dangers. The following reasons will explain why it's dangerous and why it should continue to be illegal.
The first reason is that marijuana is dangerous and it has some serious side effects. The DEA chiefs Paula Reid and Stephanie Condon say calling marijuana a medicine is a joke because it has never been more safe than dangerous.

In fact, if we were to legalize marijuana, we could start to see very high levels of dangerous or life threatening activity emerge. If this drug is legalized, it can cause crime bosses or drug lords to ship it more frequently because of its availability (“Should Marijuana Be a Medical Option?”). You may also find some of these characters living near you or the ones you love. Also it can cause a grown human to be dependent on it if used at an early age, causing them to do illegal activities like smuggling, buying, or even growing it themselves. In fact, statistics show that in Sacremento, California 84% of arrested men all tested positive for marijuana use. That percentage will probably increase if legalized, causing more arrests if people want more marijuana than their prescription(, “Marijuana, America’s most dangerous illegal drug”, James C. Backstrom, “Marijuana is drug most often linked to crime, study finds”, Rob Hotakainen). Finally, marijuana is a strong and very addictive gateway drug causing others to start abusing drugs more lethal than marijuana. Marijuana has been suggested and mostly proven to start addictions with licit and illicit drugs or substances. Often people who use marijuana are a lot more likely to start a dangerous alcohol disorder compared to people who have never used marijuana. It has been proven to be 3X more likely for marijuana users to get addicted to heroin, a drug that has killed thousands through overuse. Furthermore, vulnerable marijuana users will be more open to dangerous drugs and having them more readily available to them like cocaine, heroin, and more marijuana (“Is Marijuana a Gateway Drug”, NIDA, “Today's Heroin Epidemic Graph”, CDC).
In closure, you can clearly see that legalizing marijuana is a terrible idea. Despite some of the medical benefits, it has many terrible side-effects that can have serious health
Legalization of Marijuana in the United States is an ongoing topic that has been going on for several years. There are vast majority of Americans who are for this move and against this move. While each side has several good arguments to defend their case, neither one has a distinct advantage over the other. I will be going over several arguments or point of views as well will have several facts about the effects of Marijuana whether it is good or bad.
Marijuana does have some negative effects, but compared to other drugs marijuana is harmless. Other drugs are highly addictive were marijuana is not. Alcohol is one of the most leading causes of car crashes. Marijuana is nowhere near being a leading cause of death. Other drugs can lead to cancer where marijuana is used to cure it, and other drugs can lead to deaths. Other drugs impair you vision, but marijuana does not. All the other drugs except alcohol are gateway drugs, and the only way to purchase them is by smuggling them across the border. Many advocates say “we should begin to reflect that reality in our state and federal legislation, and stop acting as if otherwise law-abiding marijuana smokers are part of the crime problem. They are not, and it is absurd to continue using law enforcement resources arresting them.” (Gary) Many advocates also say, “Far more harm is caused by marijuana prohibition than by marijuana itself.”(Gary)
Some studies also have linked pot to suicidal thoughts. The NIDA notes that marijuana use can result in a 40% increased risk of getting psychosis, and the drug also can lead to Anxiety and Depression. Marijuana can ruin your kids’ lives. There has been an 80% increase in Weed use among teens since 2008. Do you want your teens to be making great grades for their education? You should need to know that studies have proved that teens who smoked pot regularly lost as much as eight points in their intelligence quotient test and they didn’t recover their intellectual ability when they became adults. Even though there are more articles about marijuana being good for you and the economy, I still believe that all these negative effects it has on you and the public are very bad, therefor it should remain illegal. Marijuana is used for medicine also, it is legal in 15 states for medical use only and in Colorado it is totally legal for everyone over 21 years old.
Marijuana has negative side effects on a consumer that may end up being the reason why the legalization is wrongful. Most drugs have crimes tied along them, and this automatically gives a reason to keep drugs illegal. Along
Marijuana has been seen more as a recreational drug and not a hard-core drug which is why most people do not see it as a high- risk drug or to have longing effects on a person or the body itself. Since the 20th century, marijuana has been prescribed by doctors for use to deal with glaucoma and cancer. Being that it is legal for medical use but illegal to use on a federal government level will and has always set off two different sides of legalizing or not legalizing marijuana. Marijuana cannot and should not be in categories with drugs that can kill because there are no studies of marijuana killing a person.
There are multiple cases of Marijuana deaths in America. There are thousands of reasons why marijuana shouldn't be legal. For instance, it can cause major car crashes, it can lead you into different and even worse drugs, cause your memory to fail, your attention span to diminish, and your ability to learn even harder than others. This list could go on and on, Marijuana is bad for you, no matter what you say there are facts that show how
There have been studies done that have proven that IQ’s of people 21 and older that use this drug have not been affected in the long term, even though while under the influence their IQ may drop temporarily. There have been many studies done on cannabis and they have found that the drug should not be considered a schedule I drug and that it should not be illegal but Nixon dispelled this information and kept the drug’s illegal status. In addition, it has been shown that misdemeanors have decreased and opioid use has decreased in places that marijuana is legal. It was shown in Colorado that opioid use went down by about 30%. This would mean that the overall safety of communities would be on the rise. Lastly, there are many addictive substances that are currently legal that could be compared to pot. Alcohol is legal and has the same short term effects as cannabis. Also, tobacco is the number one cause of death by an addictive substance, followed by alcohol, with marijuana in the rear. Although, this side provides many compelling arguments, the opposition has a significant number of relevant points as
Legalizing marijuana has been a dispute in American for several years now, yet should not be considered. Marijuana also referred to as cannabis or weed is one of the most controversial drugs in the world and especially in the United States. Many people believe that it should be legalized because of medical reasons but on the contrary this substance does more harm than good. Society has been negatively affected in many different ways through this hallucinogenic drug. Crime rate has increased because of marijuana and legalizing marijuana would only increase this rate. Also through the legalization of marijuana our society is at harm of many risks. Our youth
Marijuana is a highly misunderstood drug. Many assume that marijuana is a dangerous substance in which it could be the complete opposite. Researchers have found that marijuana was the cure for most illnesses and diseases. This drug is being criticized by people who doesn’t know the medical benefits about substance.
Marijuana is very safe and supporters of legalization would like to see it regulated like alcohol, or even believe that it is safe enough that regulation would not be necessary. Kayla Morgan states that “Marijuana is a safe and natural substance” and that people have been “using it for centuries” (100). Since people have been using it for centuries, no one has overdosed and marijuana is not physically addictive in the way that tobacco and alcohol are. “Studies show cannabis is not chemically addictive in the way heroin, nicotine, or alcohol is. This means the user’s body will not go into a physical withdrawal if regular cannabis use is stopped.” (Morgan 50). Marijuana is not physically or chemically addictive, which would not have as big of an effect on the user as other drugs. Drugs even prescribed to users for medicinal purposes can become addictive, and put patients through physical withdrawal.
Although people would like to think legalizing marijuana would be a success, it would be a disaster. Marijuana use leads to lapses in judgment, and is a known gateway drug, even if only used recreationally. Marijuana affects everyone differently and therefore, can be dangerous. Marijuana use increases appetite and leads to sedentariness, promoting weight gain. People seem to think marijuana can be used to treat medical conditions, but may in fact be just as dangerous and addictive as nicotine. For these reasons, marijuana should not be legalized in the United States.
When it comes to the discussion of marijuana, several controversies and debates emerge and individuals are able to express their standing on the topic. Despite the misleading statements made about the substance, marijuana has numerous advantages that outlook the negatives. Marijuana has been studied by many doctors and organizations, and it has been proven that there are no serious complications or side effects to the drug. In fact, doctors suggest marijuana to be used for medicinal use because it can help individuals suffering from cancer or other diseases. Marijuana should be legalized because it causes little to no harm on society, is safer than alcohol and other hard drugs, and can potentially save the lives of those who are in tribulation.
The Drug Enforcement Administration situations on fighting to legalize “medical” marijuana are based on two proposals: the scientific field views marijuana as a treatment while the DEA targets sick and dying people using the drug. Neither suggestion is true, science proved it is not medicine and it is not safe to use. The DEA targets on criminal trafficking and not the sick and dying. In 1970 congress authorized laws against marijuana based on that there is no logically proven medical value. Like the Food and Drug Administration, which is responsible for authorizing drugs safe an effective medicine has declined to approve smoked marijuana for any circumstance or disease.
Cannabis, formally known as marijuana is a drug obtained from the tops, stems and leaves of the hemp plant cannabis. The drug is one of the most commonly used drugs in the world. Only substances like caffeine, nicotine and alcohol are used more (“Marijuana” 1). In the U. S. where some use it to feel “high” or get an escape from reality. The drug is referred to in many ways; weed, grass, pot, and or reefer are some common names used to describe the drug (“Marijuana” 1). Like most drugs, marijuana has a very long history. People have been using the plant around the world for thousands of years. The oldest record of the marijuana plant dates back to 2727 B. C. in China where the plant was used as a medical herb for treating conditions like rheumatism, gout, malaria and even absent-mindedness (“Cannabis, Coca, & Poopy: Nature’s Addictive Plants” 1). Slowly, the plant started spreading around the world. By 1545, cannabis was starting to appear throughout the western worlds. Being introduced to South America by the Spanish to be used as fiber. The crop also had many other common uses around the world. In North America, cannabis was often used to make paper, ropes, clothing and other materials (“The Origins of Cannabis” 1).
Marijuana, weed, hashish, pot, it goes by many names. Many people argue that it should be legalize because it’s no better than alcohol and cigarettes. Although these claims holds some truth, marijuana is still a dangerous drug and adding one more problematic drug into the mix will not improve America’s health and safety issues. Although marijuana has its medical benefits, using it for recreational purposes is dangerous for both us and our society.
