Should marijuana be legalized for recreational purposes? That question, and many variances of it, have been kicked around and hotly debated for decades by the middling individual and politicians alike. Just recently, devout and faithful cannabis users have had a series of victories leading in the direction of one day national legalization of marijuana. Recreational users want marijuana legalized and politicians want the money from legalizing marijuana. It seems as if legalizing marijuana for recreational use would be a no brainer and a win-win for both sides. Then how come it is 2014 and we still don’t have national legalization of marijuana?

To comprehend what so many people are wanting legalized, it is important to understand what marijuana is. Marijuana, or cannabis sativa, as it is known to botanists and scientists, is a plant whose seeds, flowers, and or leaves are dried and either smoked or orally ingested to provide a “high” to the user. If marijuana is ingested orally, it takes longer to take effect and the effects are typically not as intense as if it were smoked. There are hundreds of known components in the marijuana plant, but the ingredient that is most often recognized and talked about is tetrahydrocannabinol, more commonly known as THC. When a user smokes marijuana, THC is absorbed into the bloodstream from the lungs and quickly makes its way through the body specifically targeting the brain.
