Legalizing Ferrets in California

General Purpose: To persuade
Specific Purpose: To persuade my listeners that ferrets should be legal to own as domesticated pets in California.
Thesis Statement: Ferrets should be legalized in California because they are actually of no danger to our indigenous wildlife, and are currently outlawed unfairly.
INTRODUCTION
I) Attention Material
a) What is a ferret?
i) Ferrets are a part of the weasel family. They are closely related to animals like otters, minks, wolverines, and badgers. ii) These animals have been a domesticated pet since as far back as 450 BC and back in the day were used to hunt rabbits and rodents by farmers and were even household pets to royalty such as Queen Elizabeth. iii) Ferrets are a type of domesticated house pet, legal in all but two states (California and Hawaii), and a few counties scattered all around America.
II) Orienting Material
a) Ferrets were initially illegalized in California because the Department of Fish and Game claims they are harmful to our indigenous wildlife, and to humans.
b) They should be made legal because all claims made by the Department of Fish and Game cannot hold up to any sort of scrutiny.
c) However, I am in favor of them staying illegal in Hawaii, because Ferrets to cause a potential risk of overpopulation on the small island ecosystems.
d) My information comes from The Legalize Ferrets Organization, Ferrets Anonymous, Dr. G. Graening, of California State University,
With this won lawsuit, the USDA is required to expand Animal Welfare Acts to not only include chimpanzees, cats and guinea pigs, but to also include rats, mice, and birds.
There was once a time they worked harder than us humans do. Back then only wealthy people owned dogs for labor purposes. For example, they chased foxes away from chicken coops and frightened rats away from restaurants. They hunted animals and pulled heavy items over snowy hills. They helped save many people's lives when fires occurred because they alerted the people. In effect, they were not considered as pets because they had a bad odor and were way too filthy to be indoors. They did not receive care so if they were ill or injured, they would either have to heal themselves or even die. In the late 1800's, things were looking better for the dogs' future. The country was becoming wealthier, so people could now afford to feed and take the care of a pet. Now, we see dogs not only as pets, but as family
Exotic animals never cease to amaze and capture the hearts of humans. Young or old, everybody is fascinated by them and wants to be in close proximity to such magnificent creatures. Some want to be so close to the wonderful animals that they are interested in owning them. Little do they know owning a wild creature can come with a hidden cost. Animals belong in the wild, and they are not meant to live in a house or be cared for by the average person. A federal law should be passed prohibiting keeping wild or exotic animals as pets because irresponsible owners have difficulties providing their wild pet with the proper care they require because they are too expensive, too large to keep, and they also endanger the public’s safety.
Hunting Gray Wolves should be illegal because they are interesting animals, that many become extinct if hunting continues. “Gray Wolves were once common throughout all of North America, but were exterminated in most areas of the United States by the mid 1930s” (“Basic Facts”). Gray Wolves are being killed by people hunting them. People hunt these wolves for the fun of it or because they’re afraid of them, but what so fun about killing innocent creatures and wolves rarely attack humans. Hunting Gray Wolves will make them become extinct. “There are an estimated…. 3700 grey wolves in the Great Lakes Region and 1675 in the Northern Rockies” (“Basic Facts”). If wolves became extinct; generations later wouldn’t be able to see them. Wolves are also in many fictional cartoons like “Three Little Pigs,” and “Little Red Riding Hood.” These two entertaining
Credibility material: This is a touchy subject for many animal lovers across the United States.
Based on the success of the drastic changes the state of Ohio has made in the exotic animal ownership regulations, their platform for change is one to model. Ohio was once a state with no restrictions on exotic animal ownership prior to the 2011 incidence of Terry Thompson, who set free his exotic animal farm of fifty plus animals before committing suicide. This incident pushed the already in question exotic pet ownership regulations into national limelight. Our task force has researched the current restrictions and the process of implementing them along with the undesirable potential side effects of these new laws. With this information, we were prepared to present a solid foundation for the state of Missouri to create a new movement in the exotic pet

There are many exotic animals all over the world that live in the wild. There are many species and some are extinct. Exotic animals are very expensive that require more than what people realize. These animals belong in their natural habitats. It is wrong and cruel for the animals that have to live in captivity when they are meant to live in the wild. Taking exotic animals out of the wild disrupts the natural food chain and negatively affects natural selection.
Some animals are kept as pets as in family. They are a part of it, like dogs or cats. They can bring people happiness. Lots of parents have pets for the reason that it could help their children learn to care about others. They think it is a good way to teach children to be good person with strong responsibility.
Today, we as a society are familiar with the concept of dogs and cats being owned and used as companions. These domestic creatures give humans love, affection, comfort, and security when in need, but what about their original purpose for domestication? Before a cat was ever considered something to cuddle up next to late at night they were mainly purposed to hunt mice and other little rodents that crept into granaries at night and soon store owners began to feed the cats or served them leftover foods mainly around Egypt and China.(Domestic Cat).
Also, if we as citizens wanted to get rid of them, we would need a lot of money to get rid of them. We would also need some scientists to cooperate with us and engage in getting rid of invasive species. They would know about these creatures and give us tips on how to remove them from our area without getting sick, harmed, or maybe even poisoned. The majority of our commercial, agricultural, and
(5) Suppressed premise: Birds and small mammals are vulnerable to attack from feral and stray outdoor cats.
1. This act was the first federal law passed in the US regulating the research done on animals.
(Attention Gainer): United States laws allow animals to be burned, shocked, poisoned, isolated, starved, drowned, become addicted to drugs, and brain-damaged (PETA).
