What is Cannabis? Cannabis, also known as marijuana, weed, pot, grass, Mary Jane, and many different names, is a plant that is widely known as a drug. Although this drug has become legal in select states for both medical and recreational purposes it remains prohibited on a Federal level to the United States Government because the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) refuse to label marijuana as a medication. They refuse to label it as a medicine because it has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and it hasn’t been approved by the FDA because NIDA refuses to provide any scientific research in order for it to get approved. Marijuana should be legalized both medically and recreationally not only on a state level but a federal level because of the numerous amounts of benefits it serves to the human body and society. There is a total of twenty-eight states within the United States that have passed the use of marijuana either medically, recreationally, or both. That is over half of the United States who voted for marijuana to be legalized at least medicinally (“28 Legal”). Four states have had marijuana legalized for recreational use since 2014. Those states, in order from first passed to last, are Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and also including the District of Columbia.
