If you had the opportunity to change one school rule, which one would it be? Most kids don’t like school rules. They want to carry their cellphones with them, and be able to have sugary snacks and drinks, etc. However, of all these rules, there is one rule that I think would be most beneficial to students and teachers if it were changed: Having recess. Currently, most middle schools do not provide a recess time at all, and this includes our middle school. Having recess would benefit our students and school environment for many reasons. If middle schoolers were provided just 30 minutes of recess every day, their bodies would be healthier, their mood would be better, and their minds would have a better ability to focus and concentrate on their school work as well.
You have heard, time and time again, how good exercise is for children. Most children aren’t getting the suggested amount of exercise

Most times, after lunch, kids are tired and just want to go home. This puts them in a slacking and mindless kind of mood, and makes them not want to work. If they were permitted to have a 30 of recess time immediately following their lunch, the majority of students would look forward to this intermission every day. It not only would allow time to walk, run, or play games that provide exercises, but it also allow social time for students to interact and this is highly important to middle school students. Emotionally, enjoyable social connections and exercise time with other students can rid stress among students as well. So, if there are some students with stress or anxiety it will help to alleviate such so they are better able to focus academically when returning to class. This exercise also produces chemicals in our body to help make us feel more positive and energetic. Recess would definitely improve the mood and atmosphere of our students, by making them happier and more pleasant
First of all, recess can allow students to relax and release energy. According to “Do You Need Recess?” by Mackenzie Carros, “...’Recess is the one break in the day to relax and have fun!’...” (pg. 31) When a student is relaxing or having fun, it helps them take a little break to run or even walk around. That can help teachers with students that have a lot of energy and disrupt class because they will lose some of that energy outside having fun. That is one reason why middle schools should have recess.
Have you ever heard a child complain to someone about something happening at school or about them being too tired to do something because of at school or from not getting enough sleep? Kids now hardly get sleep because of after school activities ending too late, from staying up late to do homework, etc. I believe that if we cut back recess just a little that kids will have more time to get their homework, or classwork finished so they don’t have to worry about it later on.
Recess is very beneficial to a students learning. Jessica Lahey, author of “Students Who Lose Recess Are the Ones Who Need It Most”, says that research shows that recess is an important part of students’ academic, cognitive, physical, and mental wellness. Recess is
Should middle get recess? Well, studentsthey have to have some sort of way to get exercise instead of waiting a whole semester for gym. "I believe quite strongly that there is great value in play. Play is learning lessons that often can't be learned anyplace else. I believe that taking away time to play will not raise test scores. It seems that with all the rush to pass standardized tests, children have less and less time to play and enjoy it," teacher Marlie Griffin tells Education World. Some students also need time for relaxation or time to play.
Recess is as important as classroom time. It is critical in development and social interaction (Rochman). Students should be able to go blow off steam, run around for a half hour, let out some energy halfway through their day. Recess can also teach young kids responsibility. If he or she gets in trouble, the school can take it away from them. This teaches children that their actions have consequences. It helps children practice conflict and resolution. “Play time benefits extend beyond the physical development in students but affects social, emotional and cognitive development,” (Rochman). After they have a break, they will be more able to focus on their studies. Who doesn’t need a break during the day? Most adults get an hour break in the middle of the day, most students get twenty
Many schools are now organizing school day schedules to maximize instructional time and minimize non-instructional time, such as recess (Pellegrini & Bohn, 2005). Schools made this shift in response to increased state testing and the associated pressures of funding. Some also believe that the shift to more instructional time and less non-instructional time was worsened with the adoption of Common Core standards in elementary schools. However, this may not be the best move for schools or for long-term student success.
Recess is a scheduled break in every student’s day that students use for unorganized sports and socializing with friends. Having recess teaches Middle Schools and High School students to learn to relax and not be in such a hurry all the time. Students ranging from 6th grade to 12th grade perform a lot better in their academics when given a 15-30 min break. Having that 15-30 minute break also helps students to pay attention and work harder in the class. Student’s need recess because it not only helps them physically but also mentally.
How do you think not having recess affects a kid’s childhood development? Elementary schools around the U.S. have been cutting kids recess time. Recess I think is very healthy for kids and shall not be cut away from them. Students only get five minutes of recess time in elementary schools now in the United States. Recess time have been cut so that the students will have more educational time.
When at recess kids tend to talk with their friends outside rather than inside the classroom. Most kids get in trouble at school for talking during class, but with the short bell schedule and little time at lunch kids will want to talk with friends therefor in the classroom. If a new kid is at the school kids will be tempted to talk with this person, but without recess the kids will never meet unless they talk in the hall and be late or in the classroom.
During our lunch periods, we should be allowed to leave school grounds and buy our own lunch. This should be allowed because to buy lunch every day depends if you have enough .money, and learning how to mange it will be very useful in the future. Most of Americans do not know how to manage their money resulting in losing more than they should have, so with just little experienced can make a difference. In addition every lunch period has a time
Many of us like to be independent and do activities at our own pace and in the way we want to do them. A lot of intermediate students stay inside during recess and attend things such as homework club and instrument practice. This means that they’re not getting the amount of physical activity they need. Children our age need at least an hour of exercise a day, our gym periods are only 40 minutes long which is not enough. Allowing us to leave the school during break will not only give us more freedom, but also allow us to walk to a different place to do what activity we feel like doing. This encourages students to get outside and be more active because leaving school property is something new and
A mental break when we can escape from everyone and anything for a little while is beneficial to us because it allows us to blow off steam, calm ourselves or just do our own thing without any fear of being judged for it. Having a break from everyone at school in the middle of the day will help make us mentally prepared for class without being much of a grouch. We would be calmer which we all know our teachers would enjoy. We’d be calmer after those breaks because us intermediates would find something useful with our time outside and be more active, which will decrease the amount of high energy we have conspicuously during our second nutrition
The children of today are becoming more overweight due to sedentary lifestyles, which can lead to obesity. Today’s technology has substituted normal childhood play exercises with computer games that take less physical effort. The National Association for Sport and Physical Education suggests that children get a minimum of 60 minutes of exercise every day. The type of activity doesn't matter as long as it's either moderate or high intensity. That includes anything from jump-rope to playing tag. Toddlers and preschool children should get 60 minutes of unstructured physical activity, and shouldn't be allowed to stay sedentary for more than an hour at a time.
Public schools are often in need of a firm reinforcement system when teaching elementary students appropriate behavior at an inexpensive cost for the school’s budget. Utah’s University conducted a study on a Utah elementary school with approximately 200 students. At the beginning stage of the study, evidence was noted that students ran throughout the lunchroom, litter was left in inappropriate areas and students displayed bad seating posture. 3(1) Examiners noticed during lunch hours, there is a large population of students and very few adults to monitor and correct
That's about four times what the rate was in the 1970s.” but what about the odds with recess it can affect children's future in many ways. With experience of recess children now things outside and learn life lessons. Without this you have lesson experience. Dreams begin at recess .And anyway isn't the government trying to stop childhood obesity. So how is removing recess going to stop or reduce obesity. It's not.that's going backwards and not forwards.
