First of all, should schools start at a later time like at 8:30 ? Some students parents think it is a good idea. Other parents don’t. According to a survey only 71% of the parents agree with it. I also agree with it. By starting at a later time it can make good changes. It will affect the students and also the parents in a good way. The students will be up and ready to go to school on time without feeling tired and prevent them falling asleep in a class or being late.

Going to school at a later time can give students more time to study the night before and feel less stress. Knowing they won't either finish a homework assignment or not enough time to study can stress the students out. If they would have more time they would be able to finish and improve in their classes. As sayed in the texed by James Maas “ These effects can have a serious impact on test scores and on the grades students receive on class projects and papers. James Maas, Ph.D., a leading expert on sleep, says that trying to educate teenagers so early in the morning does no good. Fewer mood changes will also help the students out. Moody teenager may not have depression or stuff like that but they still have ill effect due to school starting early. Staying up until 1am to finish math homework and studying for that huge history test next class is pretty routine for some teens. Juggling school, sports, a social life, and other extracurriculars is tough, and teens are already in a critical period in their life. It is the time period in which teens grow and learn the most, and sets them up for a bright future. Staying healthy both mentally and physically is imperative, and sleep is probably the most important. Schools starting as early as 7am limits a teen’s potential. If schools were to start later, the benefits would be endless. Schools starting later improves both physical and mental health of students, keeps the individual and those around them safer, and improves students performance in school and sports.
The school day should start later in order improve students’ mental health. Survey results have consistently indicated that middle level and high school students who start school at 7:15 a.m. or earlier obtain less total sleep on school nights due to earlier rise times in comparison to students at later-starting schools. Teenagers need more sleep. If schools start school later, students would be less tired. A study of eight schools in Minnesota started school 1 hour later and grades and morale went up and tardiness went down. Having a later school start time can increase a student’s academic grades and awareness. Thirty-three percent of teens say that they fell asleep in class. Even though this is a small portion of teens, falling asleep in class shouldn’t even happen once. Also, this means they are getting less than what they need,(eight to nine hours of sleep a night). A school needs to pack as much teaching time as they can in a day, but if that means waking up a student at a time so early, then there's no point.When a student doesn’t sleep as much, students are not aware as they would be if they had a good night’s rest. Half of parents favor later school start times for teens” by Mental Health Weekly Digest and it states,”... there are real life concerns about how the change may interfere with after-school activities, logistics and school budgets.” This shows that sleeping later would various disadvantages for after-school activities, along with the logics and the amount of money that the school would be spending. Since schools need the money to help fund competitions and other activities, they won’t be able to achieve going to any of those if increasing amounts of money is being used for supporting later school start times.
Typically, people enjoy receiving an extra hour of sleep, even an extra five minutes of sleep. Teens are just one group of people who enjoy sleep. Unfortunately, teens are unable to obtain the correct number of hours per night. When students are able to get the sleep they need, they are able to get up and make it to school on time.
