Should School start later? In the article “The Teen Who Woke Up Her School” by Jane Bianchi and “Should School Start Later? By Junior Scholastic, Plus the news report “Should Student Start School Later in the Morning” By ABC News. All are in support of school starting later. This shows that school start to early, schools need to start later and need to be supported by the community! The three articles I stated previously all relate to the problem that kids don't have enough time to sleep and schools should be held back longer. In the article “The Teen Who Woke Up Her School” A Teen at High School was always late for class and tired all day. She started a campaign to hold back school later, in the text it states “ On a typical school night, Jilly Dos Santos was lucky if she got four to six hours of sleep. Even when she finished her homework early, she often didn’t feel tired …show more content…
In the video, one of the reporters state's “High school starts at 7:17, that's the earliest in the county state.” This shows that school starts too early, especially in middle and high school. A graphic shows that kids don't get enough sleep. Research shows that teens need 8.5-9.5 hours of sleep, more research shows that ⅔ of high school kids don't get more than 7 hours of sleep. Not to mention 43% of high school start before 8:00! The worst part is 33% of high school students report falling asleep in class. This shows that this is a serious matter and needs to be looked into. Even though early start time are an issue, some people are on the other side of the argument. Clubs and such go after school, and we would have to be coordinated with all the other districts in the region, Jerry Kember, Superintendent of La Crosse school says. More opponents say starting classes later in the day is expensive for school districts and cunts into time for extracurricular activities and
It has been studied that teenagers need 8.5 to 9.25 hours of sleep every night. But two thirds of teenagers presumably in high school receive only or less than seven hours of sleep. This is probably due to the fact that forty three percent of high schools that are public start before 8:00
Michelle Trudeau thinks high schools will start later to help sleepy teens while, Dan Weissman thinks high schools will keep starting too early. Both authors show supporting details about how they think. In both articles “High Schools Starting Later to Help Sleepy Teens” & “High School Will Keep Starting Too Early. Here’s why.” both articles stated that school times are not starting late because it's too expensive because of transportation.
For Debate: Should Schools Start Later it states, ‘‘Teens should get between 8.5 to 9.25 hours of sleep per night, while the average teen only actually gets Most teens aren’t used to waking up so early so they tend to stay up late at night and wake up later in the morning. In the article Up about 7 hours.” Teenagers usually fall asleep on the bus or in class so they should get more sleep. It gives teens to get to their normal schedule.
Teenagers are only getting 6-7 hours of sleep a night, while they need 10. Fifty-nine percent of middle school students and eighty-seven percent of high school students are getting less than the recommended 8 1/2 to 9 ½ hours of sleep a night. Schools that have a start time of 8:30 a.m. or later give students the opportunity to get the recommended amount of sleep on school nights.
Have you ever wondered about the effects that would be brought if school started later? At the moment, school clearly begins too early. This is a problem that is unquestionably bringing negative affects to many students. Many schools throughout the country are addressing this problem by considering school schedule changes including later start times for middle and high schools. Research indicates there are unfavorable effects to current school schedules, as well as well as positive effects to delayed start times. To best meet the needs of teens, school should start later.
In conclusion, the school system should allow schools to start later. If this were to go into effect, so many students would succeed in school more. They would not be as tired and could focus so much better. In all, schools starting later would benefit everyone tremendously.
How many times has this happened to you; it’s six thirty on a Tuesday morning, your alarm has already gone off twice, your still laying in bed and your bus comes in twenty minutes. This is an everyday occurrence at my house. It is a proven statistic that the average high school student does not get enough sleep. While some experts like Dr. Lee Yanku say “It is not the schools starting time that is the problem as to why students don’t get enough sleep, it is because of facebook, myspace and cell phones” The truth behind it is that we can’t budget sports, homework and extracurricular activities into one day and still get nine hours of sleep. This is hurting student’s academic averages and needs to change. Changing the school time will help
My first reason why we should start school earlier is because kids do better when they're awake. In the article it said “in more than 40 states start school earlier than 8:30 a.m.”. In three states scientists found a significant increase in attendance, grades, and test scores. If scientist found a significant increase in grades, then if we start schools later we will get better test scores and better SBAC scores in all 40 states.
Sleep is very important for everyone. It is especially important for adolescents who are still developing. Brain development and recharging of the body are both things that take place while an adolescent sleeps. Without enough sleep, the body isn’t prepared for the next day. The body needs to get the recommended hours of sleep or it won’t perform to its best ability. In adolescents, this is an issue because scientists are finding teens are getting less and less hours of sleep due to hectic schedules causing their bodies to be worn out. Research is showing that by having schools start later, teens are getting the sleep they need to be awake and alert for the next day. Today, most schools start around 8:00 am or earlier at about 7:30 am. School
The average school day starts between 7:30 to 8:30. Students wake up way earlier than this time to be able to prepare for school. Then the normal school day lasts at least 7 hours. As a result of schools starting too early, students are cognitively affected, struggle with prior commitments, and consequently, a student’s education begins to falter along with the school's reputation.
We live in an age when many growing adolescents are constantly fighting their natural body clocks. It could potentially be one of the biggest issues facing our high school systems. Many school’s across America have started to push back their school start times. Is it worth it? The answer is yes. School should start later in order to unlock our nation’s high school potential.
The researches have been accumulating over the years that suggest that schools should move its starting time later in the day. However, it has been mostly ignored by the school systems. Even after the concrete data are presented, which shows that students often lack sleep because of schools’ early start time, the American school systems have done close to nothing. Sleep deprivation is an important public health issue and it should be taken seriously. According to Center for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 75 percent of public schools in the United States start before 8: 30 am, with 8: 03 being an average starting time (CDC). Many doctors and scientists believe that the early school is preventing students from achieving recommended amount of sleep and they have data behind that reasoning. Therefore, the school system and the U.S. government must listen to
“Being on time, managing a busy schedule, and getting enough sleep are important skills teens will need when they enter the workforce,” from article A shows how waking up early is a skill you will need when you're older, so you should start now. However, school day shouldn’t begin later because there are so many issues that could throw everything off, and why not stick to the same schedule we have been for years. In the articles, Should School Start Later?(A), and Teens Should Start at 10 a.m., Scientists Suggest. Is That Realistic?(C) both give evidence why later starts aren’t a good idea. School shouldn’t start early because of busy schedules, daylight hours, the school district, and money.
In medical research today, doctors are concluding that teenagers need more sleep than previously thought. They claim, "In order to stay healthy, adolescents need at least eight hours of sleep each night… biologically, adolescents are hardwired to stay up
