Don't you just hate waking up so early in the morning for school? Well, so do 15 million other high schoolers (not even including teachers and parents)! Well getting up early is not just bad because you are tired, it is also unhealthy. Schools should start later in the morning because students are more efficient when they are awake and high schoolers need at least 9 hours of sleep. The other side will claim that the extra time will not be used to sleep.
There are many reasons that High School should start later in the morning. The first reason is that students are healthier when they are well rested. If a student misses out on sleep during the week, even if they sleep more during the weekend, they still will be sleep-deprived. One article says that ¨Research suggests that "catching up" on sleep over the weekend doesn't erase your sleep debt. While you may feel more rested, your reaction time and problem-solving skills still lag behind.¨ (“Should Schools Start Later?”) The article also states “Even doctors feel our pain, urging schools to allow for extra slumber. The counter argument is that students will not be using this time to sleep and so there is no point in trying to fix it. Also, it will create problems with the community around it. Crawford believes “The extra wave of commuters will shift traffic patterns; working parents will need to scramble to find morning childcare; and next thing you know, the whole town has to adjust. School districts should not have that kind of power over the community.” (Crawford). He also states “Waking up early has been part of the routine since kindergarten. Why flip the script now, solely because of an updated guideline from doctors? Everyone's tired now and then. Just deal with it.”
Schools all around the nation have starting times for school, that are too early for the students and teachers alike. Schools starting times should be 8:30 in the morning or later, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Sleep loss has become more common in children due to early start times which only gives them 6-7 hours of sleep a night when growing children should have 8-9 hours a night. children suffer the chronic loss of sleep due to the hormonal roller coaster that you call puberty, which only lets them begin to go into a REM sleep around 10 p.m. . It’s also been proven that adolescent children suffer from highers risks of physical health problems, mental health problems, lower test scores, missing school, substance abuse, and being in a car crash due to sleep deprivation. Students end up having to get up before 6:30 to get ready and catch the bus or walk to school, but when you have to study for hours after school, eat, clean up, participate in extracurricular activities, including sports and clubs, and do chores in less than 4 hours to get the sleep they require to be healthy mentally and physically it’s almost impossible. School should start later to better our future generations, with more sleep we could have more positive members of societies.

Students are very drowsy in the morning and are usually rushing to get to school on time which limits breakfasts times and healthy food options. Schools should start no earlier than 8:30 a.m. for several reasons but sleep deprivation is the most important. Sleep deprivation can cause a direct effect to a child’s general health and behavior, public safety and potentially future success.
Research has shown that teenagers experience a change in their internal sleep clocks so that waking up early and going to sleep early are difficult. I agree with the decision to change school times and what it has to offer. This would not only help the teenagers with many things but also accommodate the parents schedules too. I believe that if the school system were to alter the times so that High Schoolers were to wake up later then it would fix various conflicts; teen depression, lack of awareness, and it allows parents to work later.

Teenagers need more sleep. If schools start school later, students would be less tired. Having a later school start time can increase a student’s academic grades and awareness. Thirty-three percent of teens say that they fell asleep in class. Even though this is a small portion of teens, falling asleep in class shouldn’t even happen once. Also, this means they are getting less than what they need,(eight to nine hours of sleep a night). A school needs to pack as much teaching time as they can in a day, but if that means waking up a student at a time so early, then there's no point.When a student doesn’t sleep as much, students are not aware as they would be if they had a good night’s rest. If students had this sleep, the would pay more attention in class. Therefor, a student would have better grades.

Sleep experts at the university of Mminnesota studied eight high schools before and after the moved to later start times. They found that the later start time, the better off students were on measures like mental health, car crash rates, attendance, and in some schools, grades and standerized test scores. With later starting time you’ll have more time to sleep and will be able to pay attention in class so you can get that good grade.
I am implying that Redondo Beach Unified School district and schools around the country should change schedules to start an hour later. As one mom states on her blog “If teens are going to school later and later, they won't train their bodies to go to sleep at a reasonable hour. Training their bodies is something that will be useful to them in adult life,” (Grose). Some principles at school still do not believe that pushing back the school start do would be beneficial. They say it is because students only take into account school starting later and not having to stay in school for the same number of hours a day. Also, that children enjoy getting out at 2 or 3 pm because then they have time for extracurricular activities and do not have to miss school if they participate in a sport (Rasicot). High school students should have a later starting time in school due to students not getting the amount of sleep they need to function. Students that stay up late at night are way too tired to learn when they get to school early in the morning. Most students who do stay up late are unable to sleep due to melatonin not yet being produced. This shows that starting school at a later time would have many positive benefits. These benefits include higher test scores, increased attendance, more participation from students, and higher performance from athletes.

When students are able to get the sleep they need, they are able to get up and make it to school on time. Also when students get the sleep needed, they not only are able to make it to school on time but it gives them the sleep they need to be able to function which improves academically. High School start times should start later because it allows more sleep for teenagers, increases attendance and improves academically.
