Should Students Be Allowed To Carry On Campus

College is seen as the beginning of young adult life, but campus crime can prevent the continuation of that life.Yet, campuses still prohibit students from carrying essential self defense weapons. This is most likely due to their ignorance of the benefits involved with allowing campus carry. Campus carry improves the overall environment of a college and promotes safety. Students should be allowed to carry guns on campus due to the current lack of protection offered through the university and an individual’s lawful rights, despite the belief that it would cause an escalation in violent crime.

This forces students to rely on the campus police to protect them, but due to the size of most universities, adequate protection is virtually impossible. Simply said, “university police are unable to prevent violent crimes, and it is heartlessly arrogant to disarm potential victims” and leave them with no means of defense against an attacker (Lund). By prohibiting guns, students are put in unavoidable, dangerous situations every day. It is a truly despicable act to leave students defenseless, yet colleges continually deny that there is an issue involving campus security. Constantly, students face the reality that if a dangerous situation occurs, they will not be capable of protecting themselves or others. This results in students constantly fearing for their safety as they roam the campus waiting to become a victim of a lurking criminal. Every student deserves an education, but more importantly, they deserve safety in all situations. Although colleges strive for a safe campus, all campuses have some type of criminal activity. Ratified on December 15th 1791 “the Second Amendment provides U.S. citizens [with] the right to bear arms” (Brooks), making gun carry permitted under law. Therefore, guns should not be prohibited as long as the gun and the individual meet federal standards. Lawfully, students capable of possessing a gun license should be allowed to carry them onto any public university. Gun carry is the right of every United States citizen. Yet, many places have banned gun carry, despite the fact that it is written as a basic right in the constitution. The second amendment was established to allow individuals to have the “right to bear arms for the defence of themselves and the state” (Konig). This means that any individual should be allowed to use guns as a way of protecting themselves and others. In the modern day, violence is too great of an issue to prohibit defense weapons. Constantly, violent acts occur in every crevice of every city, but many deny the cold, hard truth. Also, many states, such as Texas, have passed open carry laws. Allowing for the gun(s) to be visible in public places, as long as the individual possesses the correct papers. This means that guns are already a large part of an individual’s daily life in several states. Many find it preposterous that gun carry is prohibited in many places, despite federal and state laws.
