Should Students Be Required To Stay In School Until They Graduate

A person who does not have a high school diploma is at higher risk of being unemployed being a single parent, being in a gang, or being in prison; therefore, the mandatory age for leaving high school should be raised.

In the United States, over 1.2 million students drop out of high school every year. This is about one student every 26 seconds or 7,000 students a day. These alarming statistics are unfortunately a reality. Many of these kids face severe consequences throughout their life because of this one bad decision. These challenges could be avoided if students are required to graduate and receive their diploma. Students should be required to stay in school until the age of 18 to protect their well-being, ensure they won’t make a decision that they will likely regret, and give them more opportunities in their adulthood.

Believe it or not, the legal age for students to graduate high school in 21 states is age 18. This means that students do not get to make their own choices on whether they want to stay in school till 18 or drop out. Students should be able to leave school when wanted and should not be required to stay in school till age 18.

Every year, over 1.2 million students drop out of high school in the United States alone. That’s a student every 26 seconds-or 7,000 a day. Students should be able to graduate in three years because some kids want to go to college as early as possible, it would allow people to get better jobs at a younger age, and it would cause less drop outs because they could finish it in less time and graduate faster.

According to US News, in 2008, more than one million students did not finish high school. Each year, the amount of dropouts is greater and greater. The high school dropout age should be increased. It should be increased because of the increase in graduation rates and higher earnings, but yet some believe there are benefits to dropping out of school. Graduation rates increasing is one of the many benefits if the age is raised.

If you never went to school where do you think that you would end up? Do you think that you would have a job? If so what kind of job do you think you would have, flipping hamburgers at a fast food restaurant, or working at a grocery store? Maybe you would have another job, one that doesn't pay well with lots of manual labour. Poverty is a major problem in America, little did you know that one major factor leading to them can be easily solved. When kids drop out of school they do not think about their future, that can be completely destroyed by one simple choice. Kids should legally not be allowed to drop out of high school because that has a major negative impact on their future, their children, and on their surroundings.

The dropout problem is not only an individual problem, but it is costly to society as a whole. Warren & Halpen-Manners (2007) explained, “high school dropouts is of fundamental social, economic, and political importance and has major implications for educational policy and practice, patterns of economic and racial/ethnic inequality, and the quality of America’s workforce” (p. 335). Coupled with that, Neild et al (2008) further argued going through the portal into adult life without high school credentials carries severe economic and employment penalties. Obtaining an education is essential in today’s society. Most students who attend school on a regular basis usually succeed in life. On the other hand, many students fail to attend school every day which can lead to problems in schools. However, some students have acceptable reasons for dropping out. As a result, a student’s punctuality can ultimately alter his or her education. On that note, dropping out of high school can affect an individual in many ways throughout the years. Schools are facing challenges dealing with high dropout rates, high rates of truancy, and low graduation rates because students are failing to attend school.

All through high school one always wonders why certain courses have to be taken. Thinking certain courses are a waste of one’s time and how it takes 12 years just to receive a diploma. Sounds crazy to think half of one’s life is spent in school preparing to receive a better understanding of education. During graduation, walking through the stage makes one along other proud and accomplished of all the efforts that took place. This not only helps one become more educated and aware of the things going around them, but helps become financially stable with a job or other necessities in life. Therefore, high school should be mandatory for students at least till there are 18, and not to drop-out.

Most people who drop out of high school have that kind of life. There are some who become successful and have their own businesses and make a good living. However, most people who drop out end up having to go back to school later in life because it gets too difficult to live comfortably especially if some have to support a family. In today's society, it is even tougher to make a living without having an education and people who drop out should think again because it only gets harder each and everyday. People today think they can take the easy way out by starting the real world early, but they quickly realize that it is a mistake because reality hits. Life is hard, especially without an education and it is a huge struggle to survive in this world today. Most people today who have to go through the struggle because of dropping out in high school wish that there was a reset button, but there is only one chance and that is why people should not drop out.

It is a big concern for many in the United States dealing with high school dropouts. Ever year the rate of high school dropouts is increasing at a rapid pace than expected. The dropout rate of persons under the age of 18 has risen from 8.1% in 2009 to 9.2 % in 2012 according to the National Center for Education Services. These kids are leaving school at a young age and have a lot of spare time on their hands and when this occurs, persons around their years of 18 can end up in trouble. Students cannot have high achievements until they meet the school standards and expectations. Tom Precious, in his article “Drop Out Age,” states “too many young people fail to recognize that it is nearly impossible to meet the demands of modern society and to live successfully without at least a high school education” (Precious 1). It is inferred that due to a lack of family encouragement, students fail to realize that education is one of the key factors needed for the workforce. According to the article, “the lawmakers said that in the 1996-97 school year, 27,629 students in New York high schools dropped out” (Precious 1). This means that the students’ attitudes are negative regarding school, and they have absolutely no value in education due to the way they were raised. Students have no interest in achieving high results needed for a successful future. There are numerous disadvantages of a dropout. On average, a dropout earns less money, more likely to be in jail, less healthy, less likely to be married, and is unhappier than a high school graduate. Therefore, students must be motivated and must have a positive attitude about school in order to avoid such discrepancy. This problem disproportionately affects low-income students as well as minority students. As stated in the article, “the legislation comes as the Board of Regents is moving to raise the educational bar for high school students--a move that many educators support but fear could lead to an increase in the dropout rate. In the coming years, students will have to pass five Regents exams in order to graduate” (Precious 1). This change may force the students to work harder and be motivated in order to pass high school and graduate. The requirement age to stay in school has been a highly debated topic. Even the president himself Barack Obama has gotten involved in this topic. Personal dilemmas, the president taking interest himself , and the average income produced by people of different income should persuade the government to raise the number of mandatory years required for dropping out.

Will negatively affect a student's future. Bob Keeshan once said,”Children don't drop out of High School when they are 16 they do so in the first grade and wait 10 years to make it official.” Throughout the years studies have shown that in a year 1.2 million students drop out. Which leads that only 25% of High School students during their freshman year fail to graduate. Dropouts in the United States have became a very trending thing we must get to the bottom of this problem. Young adults should not be making these decisions it's time to step in.
