The Catcher in the Rye The Catcher in the Rye is a book written by J. D. Salinger that was published on July 16, 1951. Over the years it has been a target of controversy and an abundance of debate on whether the book should be censored, and if it is okay to teach it in the schools. The book contains a plethora of crude language as well as topics including sex and alcohol. What critics do not see, however, is censoring such a book would be a waste of time and is not necessary. The Catcher in the Rye should not be censored. Censoring the book would infringe on the freedom of speech and would go against our constitution. Also, kids are already being exposed to such topics and language everyday. To censor the book would do no good unless you censored everything every kid saw or heard. First of all, in America's constitution it is stated that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise there of; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press." To censor a book because of the languages used would be a violation of The First Amendment. Also, this right is not limited in anyway, meaning that both admits and minors have to right to attain information, books, articles or anything else freely without hindrance. …show more content…

Many of them are faced with it everyday. Weather it be at the school yard or friends or outside influences or even at home. One way or another the students will be exposed to the language that would be censored. In addition to this, censoring one book will not solve anything. You would have to censor every book, magazine, TV show, and practically the entire internet to truly shield the youth. So if this is the case, why not expose them to these curses and topics in a safe controlled environment where they can learn about it educationally and benefit from
