The Government Should Not Raise the Minimum Wage

The economic status is unstable, and every politician who runs for office would explain their solutions for our economic crisis by creating jobs and raise wages. Recurrent debates over this topic convinced many people to believe raising the minimum wage is the key for financial problems. However, the consequences resulted in this solution will make matters worse. People are ignoring the contradictory logic between “creating jobs” and “raise wages”. These two terms are opposite from each other, in fact, raise the minimum wage will not only damage small businesses but also reduce employment. Everyone wants the most of everything including money. The purpose for minimum wage was to pay high school or college students who have yet decided their permanent careers. According to The Future of Freedom Foundation article, “Minimum-wage workers tend to be people who are young, have never been married, are unskilled, have no more than a high-school education, work part-time, and work in the leisure and hospitality sectors of the economy.” There is a reason why they are called “minimum wage” is because they are the starting point, not a career. Companies will give more pay for higher skilled workers compare to McDonald’s workers. Raise minimum wage would prevent full employment and inhibit economic growth. Raise minimum wage will cause the increase in other’s wages as well. It wouldn’t be fair if the minimum wage worker makes the same hourly pay as the higher skilled worker. You have to give both sides the same thing in order to prevent unfairness. However, if the government raises personal pays then the price of goods will increase as well which can cause inflation.
