Should We Put Guns On Our Campuses?

Due to the recent upheaval of violent crimes on campus, many pro-gun activist have suggested that both the students and teachers should be allowed to carry concealed weapons on campus. Those for this may claim that their rights have been violated because many college campuses refuse to allow weapons of any kind on campus. It is not the right to carry a gun which is in debate here, but rather it is whether or not guns should be allowed on a college campus. The Constitution of The United States of America already grants citizens the right to carry guns, and being in the south, I am by far no stranger to seeing a gun from time-to-time, but it is not appropriate for guns to be in a vulnerable area such as a college campus. There are already too many guns available to the public, and allowing them on an educational facility would greatly increase the likelihood of injury or death. Americans, as previously mentioned, have the right to bear arms, and this should be held sacred, and not infringed, taken away, or limited. However, stricter firearm control should be implemented for those who chose to carry a concealed weapon, and gun control should be done by having stricter certification processes before a firearm or gun permit is issued, intensive psychological evaluation for the person or persons applying for a gun permit or a gun,and greater educational requirements for gun owners and firearm safety.

Allowing guns on campuses has to be one of the most absurd solutions conceived to regulate safety. Firearms have no place in the hands of staff and students on campus. The idea is totally blown out of proportion because many universities actually considering concealed carry believe the impact will be less crime and more safety, but what exactly does it mean to allow a weapon on college property? People that are for campus carry argue that those with a firearm will be able to defend themselves against any incident that is bound to happen, but what happens when they pull out a gun? In 2007, 32 students and teachers die after being held at gunpoint on the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University by a student, Seung Hui Cho, who attended the school later on dies from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. In all 27 students and 5 faculty members died. I really think that guns shouldn't be allowed on college campuses at all because it will cause a distraction from the learning environment, would lead to an increased number of suicides by college students, a gun might go off by accident, most college students are too young to carry a concealed handgun license, and school shootings don't happen that often and college campuses are very safe so, therefore, there is no need to carry a concealed weapon on a campus.

It seems that tragedy and violence across America are becoming all too common in our daily news. Even more tragic is when it is at a school. With the increase in violence across America, it is opening the door to the question of should college campuses allow concealed guns on campus? Allowing concealed guns on campuses is something that may come true at public colleges across Georgia. Recently, the Georgia senate passed a bill by 37-17 that would allow gun owners 21 and over to carry concealed weapons on public college campuses. If Governor Nathan Deal approves the bill it will go into effect (The Associated Press). While some feel this could potentially open the door to more violence, others believe this will give them the ability to protect themselves should the need arise.

The first arguement for concealed guns on campus comes from insiderhighered.com written by Kaitlin Mulhere. She states that so far eleven states are discussing on being able to carry a concealed gun on campus. There has been at least one bill that has been suggested in about half of the fifty states within past few years for guns on campus. So far, seven states have made laws allowing guns on campus. Kaitlin says that there are two views on the issue. One being that it is a constitutional right for one to be able to carry a gun. The second being that it will make campuses safer from shooters and other criminals. The decision for college and university campuses to allow their students to carry concealed weapons on campus is a risky debate that one should disagree with. A numerous amount of unfortunate events that have a chance of happening would result as a train thought if the decision was made. Various public schools below college level have been publicized throughout the years to have been involved with shootings, threats, or suicide with arms that were sneaked onto campus discretely, or exposed through a rageful manner fired at random innocent individuals. The US constitution states it is the citizen’s right to bear arms. (US Constitution art II) The right to bear arms is a right, although not necessarily required in today’s world. What is the purpose for having firearms on a college campus across the US? College campuses should be considered a safe haven to further education, expand our thoughts, ideas and maintain enlightened citizenry. Fostering a place of self-growth and improvement is critical to nourishing the U.S. democratic ideals.  You can’t be comfortable in any learning environment if you are thinking about guns and their presence. Guns could be use as intimidation if they are carried openly in a classroom. I feel the restrictions on gun ownership are not severe enough when it comes to owning and possessing a gun. So let’s tighten them up and keep guns off our campuses.

Guns on campus lead to violent shootings. Students with guns on campus are a threat to everyone. They cause others to feel unsafe and grab everyone’s attention. If a student argues with a fellow student and they both disagree something could go wrong. “Concealed carry laws have the potential to dramatically increase violent on college and university campuses” (Dickerson). Violence flourishes everywhere we go in today’s society. There is no way out and no way to escape it. Going to college, does not make you feel any safer than being outside of college. Mass shootings this year have increased, especially in school all over the United States. Even though, the shootings have been in most high schools, they can be on college campuses just as well. Gun concealment should be allowed on college campuses. We deserve the right to protect ourselves. We deserve to feel safe anywhere we go without any fear of harm. They cannot take the second amendment away from the people. Students and faculty need extra security when they cannot rely on the authorities to be there. Special requirements should be intact, but if concealing a gun to feel protected is strong, there will be no problem taking the requirements.

Since the beginning of public education, there have been heinous crimes on the campuses of the schools. These crimes have taken place everywhere, from Columbine High School all the way to a classroom on the Virginia Tech campus. To be more specific the most devastating crime that can take place on a collegiate campus is a mass shooting. So, with more and more states beginning to allow those who possess a conceal carry permit, to carry at more places throughout the state. The question is asked, should college campuses allow students to carry a concealed handgun, while attending class. Some will say that there are already solutions in place; but, these solutions are not effective. The answer is yes, allowing students to carry is the only way to deter mass shootings on a college campus. Now some may ask, “What exactly is concealed carry?” Furthermore, more restaurants and places of work are beginning to allow employees and customers to enter with their concealed weapon. With the crime rate on the rise at most college campuses, campuses should consider allowing students to carry concealed weapons to deter crime.

While some people argue that allowing firearms on campus would cause more shootings and gun-related deaths, or make more students uncomfortable in their own classrooms, there are many facts and arguments to combat this. People with negative intentions will not be stopped by the law, and by removing gun-rights, the rights of people with good intentions would also be removed. Enforcing more gun laws on campuses would help fight the number of gun related deaths each year. Would school shootings be reduced if guns were allowed on college campus or would it make more school shootings. Not very many people believe that guns were allowed to be carried around with them throughout the day let alone a school campus, surprising adults and staff at colleges students are allowed to have guns on college campuses in Georgia and Arkansas. Some people on these college campuses feel that they need a gun to put a hold on school shooters or just for defending themselves. But others feel that it jeopardizes the campus. It makes them feel in more insecure because the students do not know who may have a gun on campus which makes students frightened to just be on campus. With that information guns on college grounds is a controversial topic because some people feel the need to protect themselves by having a gun on campus and others feel the need to leave the guns and weapons to the authorities by not having guns on campuses.

First, access to gun seems to lead to an escalation of violent crime (Blumstein 1). The percentage of students that could be robbed on their way to class has increased (“Crime stats show troubling trend at nation’s schools:: SI&A…). Campuses that do not have metal detectors to screen the students are at risk for violent crime (“School Metal Detectors – School Security”). Some students could be carrying guns without legally obtaining gun license to carry them. New Orleans colleges and universities have not experience gun violence as other college/universities around the world.

There is a big debate to whether guns should be allowed on college campus’. One side claims that guns should be on campus because students need a form of self-defense, as there have been cases were someone needed a form of defense. The other side claims that guns would lead to an escalation in crimes on college campus. Both sides are very logical, causing people to be on either side of the debate.
