Shackleton, the star of the novel ‘Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World’ was a very good leader, but what were three characteristics he could use for different occasions? He did show many different characteristics, but the best three I chose are Dauntless as well as Allegiance and don’t forget about Lively. Showing characteristics are always fun, but when you show good characteristics it’s even better. Shackleton is a prime example of showing good characteristics. “They could not linger in their cave all winter, dining on seal meat and toasting their feet at a driftwood fire. The men on Elephant Island were still counting on them.” The significance of this quote is so important because it shows that Shackleton does have loyalty to these guys. This man would not stop talking about his adventures in the south and kept on going back. This is an important topic to talk about because it may show others to be more like him and bring the good from inside them out just like Shackleton and his Dauntless, Allegiance, and Lively characteristics.
One thing about Ernest Shackleton is that he is a gutsy man, he went on three expeditions across the seas all the way to the Antarctic. Arguably, someone could say that one of his personalities could be described as Dauntless. Dauntless means that he is very confident in himself or even the bottom of the barrel and that he shows no fear in what he does. When he goes down to the south he encounters various different challenges to conquer and
Through Frederick Douglass’s, Sam Houston’s, and my own life, being fearless, determined, and dependable has helped us be great leaders. In all great leaders, character plays an important part, for it defines the way they will interact with people and situations. Leaders tend to have strong traits, courage and ambition, for example.
In order to endure, one must get along with himself to prevent the self-pity that cripples the human organism, and he must also cooperate with his peers unless he wants to abandon any help he might have received from the resourceful human community around him. There it is then, Shackleton's indefatigable trait, the positive attitude that permits people to explode through obstacles by the means of cooperation of mind, body, and peers.
James Cameron directed and co-produced Titanic in 1997. It is one of the epic tragical-romantic films of all time. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Jack Dawson (hero) and Kate Winslet plays Rose DeWitt Bukater (heroine). Titanic tells the evergreen love story of Rose and Jack. Rose is a first class passenger, but her family is going through financial crises which her mother Ruth is trying to resolve and retain their weakening high-class status through her marriage with Cal Hockley, her fiancé. Agitated over this marriage she attempts suicide by jumping off the stern of the ship. Jack, a poor painter, discourages her from suicide and saves her life. This is a pivotal scene where an epic romance begins. The acting, setting, and lighting play
One of the qualities is that a leader should know what his/her people are capable for. Not only understand their personalities, but he/she also knows how to make decisions based on their abilities and skills. In the book, Endurance: Shackleton 's incredible voyage, the author Alfred Lansing (2014) talks about Shackleton’s third expedition to the Antarctic. One of the segments talks about that Shackleton and his crew launched three lifeboats to sail west. Apparently, James Caird was the strongest and most comfortable one among the three lifeboats. However, Shackleton did not take the most skillful crewmembers with him, instead he took the crewmembers that were hard management and accompany. He made this decision relied on his knowledge about the strengths and limitations of the crewmembers. He
Leadership As the esteemed writer John Updike once said “A leader is one who out of madness or goodness volunteers to take upon himself the woe of the people”. Many great pieces of literature illustrate the numerous qualifying factors of effective and inspiring leadership. Some examples can be found in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, and Doug Stanton’s
For an exemplary leader, what is one of the highest compliments that you could ever receive? Sir Ernest Shackleton was a British explorer who–after failing to reach the Southern Pole first–wanted to be the first to ever accomplish a trans–Antarctic expedition. On October 27th, 1915 Shackleton’s boat–the Endurance–was crushed by the pressure of the melting Antarctic ice; leaving Shackleton and his crew stranded in the Antarctic. On August 30th, 1916 after a treacherous one and a half years of living in the Antarctic and surrounding islands, Shackleton and his crew were rescued following an unimaginable story of survival. The qualities of leadership Shackleton exhibited that resulted in the survival of him and his crew were, having certain
A starship is on its way to populate the New World, because Earth was destroyed by a colossal catastrophe. The ship originally could sustain thirteen colonists; unfortunately, the ship was damaged and now can only sustain five colonists of the thirteen. The colonists who should stay of the ship and survive, need to be the colonists with the most importance and essential experience for traveling to a New World. Even though the New World could provide a variety of different outcomes, the colonists who should survive need to be the ones who would provide the most safety precautions in certain situations.
Today we searched the shipwreck, that we found and found many cool things. The ship had 6 cannon ports and we believe that the ship had two masts. Also we found this ship 4,363 feet below sea. In the ship we found musket parts, ceramic cups and dishes, clothing, and a toothbrush. These items were from all over the world. The items were from Britain, China, Mexico, and and Canada. After we found these items I was extremely ecstatic, because I did not think we would find things like that. Also the items gave us clues to what kind of ship this was. We believe that the ship was a government paid ship, that went around the world and made sure the sea was safe. Lastly, there were two other ships found nearby and by our findings in the first
Science has helped people survive shipwrecks in many different ways. For example, back in 450 B.C a Greek researcher wrote about death from hypothermia. “Those who could not swim perished from that cause, others from the cold”. This later lead to an Assyrian King Assur-nasir-Pal's army to use inflated animal skins to cross a moat so they wouldn't be affected by the temperature of the moat.
Ernest Shackleton, a man with heart, vision and a dream. He had all the skill for success; yet never achieve the fame and fortune he desired. Looking over his life, his character and his experiences give us an insight to who he really was. I will show that he had the skills necessary to be consider one of the great leaders of his time.
The topic of this leadership case study is Ernest Shackleton. This paper will identify the development of Shackleton's leadership skills, provide examples and reflections of his abilities, and relate how he played an essential role in one of history's greatest survival stories. This study of Shackleton's leadership is set loosely within the framework of the five practices of exemplary leadership set forth in The Leadership Challenge by Kouzes and Posner, and will focus on the benefits produced by his management of team morale and unity (13).
The man in front of her steepled his fingers anxiously. The violin, if given the seal of authenticity – there was no question of it being real in his mind, merely of what she would say – would be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. The moment young Mary had pointed it out in the attic, his head had been flooded with daydreams about cars and house renovations.
1. Ernest Shackleton, acting as captain of the Endurance, demonstrated incredible leadership. There were several elements. The first is that he provided inspiration, even during difficult times. The crew faced numerous challenges while it was trapped in the ice, and on Elephant Island. During these challenges, Shackleton was able to provide inspirational leadership that kept the spirits of the crew member up. This was important, because negative morale in a life or death situation usually means death. So Shackleton's ability to provide positive morale was critical to the survival of him and his crew.
A difference that I notice in reference to Shackleton as opposed to other leaders is his concern for his crew members. Shackleton had a higher regard for his men’s safety than his own. Shackleton treated his man as if they were friends rather than just workers; he treated them with high respect and not as a resource to be used. Typically leaders will treat their crew or workers as if they are less than
