Art’s many different medias allowed artist throughout the ages to capture women at both their strongest and most vulnerable points. It has the power to capture a woman: as a naïve, young girl clutching her brother as they are painted into a lasting portrait, a golden statue of an angel sent down to Earth to help a saved man take his first steps into an eternal life with God, to the powerful goddess, Artemis, transforming a hunter into a deer and having his hunting dogs tragically attack him. The six pieces of art chosen express the individuality of each women who has walked, walks, and will walk the earth.
Also, in my discussion I reflected on how, “this image is culturally important because it represents that females can be strong and powerful.” I never realized how much art can reflect upon the society and how important the media is when it. There are a lot of politics in art, but not all art forms can be pleasing to the viewers, it’s about doing what you like and there is no need to adjust your point of view. There are so many different types of art forms, and I’m glad we experienced and learned about them in this class. I have ultimately formed a love for different art forms, and can’t wait to experience them in the future.

Such luxurious and high fashions are visibly seen through their advertisements such as their “Armani Code” fragrance. In the Giorgio Armani ad, audiences can see the similarity in the different fragrance ads for men and women such as the same models but in different positions. However, one could see the difference in choice of audiences by closely analyzing the visual and rhetorical appeals. Both the Giorgio Armani advertisements, “Armani Code” for men and “Armani Code” for women look very similar in retrospect due to the intimate and sexual appeal they exude. However, by analyzing visual and rhetorical appeals, one could clearly see the distinct difference in choice of audiences despite selling the same product which is the fragrance. Choosing an artifact for the box was an easy decision. I chose to put a picture of my dog, Chocolate, because he is very important to me. He is a two year old Schnoodle (half Schnauzer half Poodle) who we rescued from the animal shelter. It will be exciting to look back at what he looked like as a puppy. Just as there is a male gaze, there is also a female gaze. Mulvey argues that, “... such arguments don’t consider how insistently women are presented as sexual objects” (Monash). And yet many continue to argue that genres such as romantic comedies invalidate the male gaze’s offensiveness because it sexualizes men in the same way women are. In response Mulvey points out that, “... female viewers are not invited to desire male bodies, instead, they’re positioned, to identify with a heroine that is desired by a man” (Monash). Take the widely popular Love Actually. One of the most prominent romantic comedies in the industry, it follows several storylines of characters falling in love. Though good natured in spirit, the movie’s assigned gender roles pose a problem. The relationship between the latina maid, Aurelia, who doesn’t speak English, and novelist, Jaime is purely physical. Due to the language barrier, they never have an actual conversation and in fact Jaime doesn’t even admit that he’s in love with Aurelia until she strips and jumps in the lake to retrieve his papers. After Jaime leaves, Aurelia learns English, but doesn’t pursue a better situation, instead choosing to wait for him to return. It displays the woman as dependent with a future dependent on the man. When one thinks of art and religion, one may think of gender role defiance and non-conformism. While this may be generally true in present times, it was not always this way. Women and men have had distinctly different places in society, these places often being unequal. Generally most well-known works throughout the ages have adhered to and represented what society regarded as the proper gender roles for men and women. This is represented in three works of art which will be discussed: Hamlet by William Shakespeare, The Courtier: Book 3 by Baldassare Castiglione, and Luncheon on the Grass by Eduoard Manet. While these three forms of art come from different times and are of different mediums, they are connected in that they follow and represent the gender roles of their time.
