Nursing is an act and science that deals with retaining, attaining and maintaining optimal client health (Sapountzi-Krepia, 2013). It is an activity that helps in the client care and alleviation of ailment. Florence Nightingale viewed nursing as the act of utilizing the environment of the patient to assist in the recovering. She encouraged nurses to care for people beyond the sick bed, and campaigned for upgrades in healthcare by promoting wellness and prevention of death in the community. Florence Nightingale is considered as the first nurse theorist that raised the status of the nursing to an occupation and helps with the development of nursing theory (Alligood, 2014). In nursing practice, four concepts are identified as the metaparadigm …show more content…
This because the Shuler Nurse Practitioner Practice model is built upon wellness theory, as well as nursing process, and it is organized within the system theory. In addition, it has medical model components such as, ordering diagnostic testing, determining medical diagnoses and prescribing medications. (Shuler & Davis, 1993). Shuler Nurse Practitioner Practice Model serves as a guide for integration of values and beliefs regarding the concepts of person, nursing, health, environment, and Nurse Practitioner (NP) role. It is an open system that consists of an organized set of dynamic and rhythmic interacted parts and processes. The model is built to guide the Nurse Practitioners through the entire clinical patient interaction, which will be created according to the type of visit. (Shuler & Davis, …show more content…
Shuler viewed each person from the general systems perspective as a whole being comprised of physiological, social, cultural, psychological, and spiritual aspects. The person is seen as being in constant interaction with a dynamic environment always seek to maintain stability, and ultimately responsible for his or her own health, and has the right to accept or reject health care. (Shuler & Davis, 1993). Application of this concept is directed in my practice setting towards health promotion, preventive care. Health: According to Shuler is a dynamic and ongoing state that is related to the aspects of the person or individual. Health comprises of the processes of wellness, illness, disease prevention, health promotion, self-care, rehabilitation and education, and individuals’ health status is both a personal and social responsibility. (Shuler & Davis, 1993). In my practice setting, my goal is to make sure that my clients achieve their optimal health
Florence Nightingale, considered the founder of modern nursing, first began to establish nursing as a profession during the Crimean War. Since then, nursing theorists have continued to expand on the thought that patients are made up of more than just the symptoms they present with, Abraham Maslow, Carl Jung, Dr. Larry Dossey and Dorothy Johnson, but none more so than Jean Watson. She developed a theory of human caring that contained several core concepts, these concepts lay forth the ground work for how we, as nurses, should care for a patient. These concepts included transpersonal caring relationships (going beyond ego to higher “spiritual” caring
person as someone with psychological, intellectual, and spiritual components. This is evidenced by her acknowledgment of the importance of variety. For example, she wrote of “the degree . . . to which the nerves of the sick suffer from seeing the same walls, the same ceiling, the same surroundings” (Nightingale, 1860). A nurse was defined as any woman who had “charge of the personal health of somebody” whether well, as in caring for babies and children, or sick, as an “invalid” (Nightingale, 1860). Above all, nursing was “service to God in relief of man”; it was a “calling” and “God’s work” (Bostridge, 2008). All nursing actions were guided by the nurses’ caring, which was guided by underlying ideas about God. Nightingale placed spiritual needs of the patient right at the top along with caring for the patient. She taught about obedience in relation to nursing and this revealed that she was creating a profession that was based on the role of wife and mother. In her teaching, she tried to concentrate more on the lifestyle and moral conduct of the nurses, rather than their professional skills. The measurement of the art of nursing could not be accomplished
Florence Nightingale is known as the pioneer of nursing and evidence- based health care. Many believe that she was the founder of what we call modern nursing today. During her time as a nurse she had founded her school of nursing at St. Thomas Hospital in 1860 as well she wrote many nursing books such as Notes on Nursing wrote in
Historically the role of the nurse has been as a patient advocate. Nurses’ have advanced from being seen as low cost labor to an autonomous practioner. Prior to Florence Nightingale the nurse was a member of a religious order or under the direction of the military. Florence Nightingale established the first nursing schools and was responsible for their own practice. In the early 1900’s nursing education was taken over by hospitals and the licensing of nurses began. In the 1990’s nurse practioners, (under the license of a physician), began prescribing
Florence Nightingale is known as the founder of modern nursing. Her contributions and influence not only to the nursing profession, but to the public health care system, is unparalleled. She was instrumental in establishing multiple processes and practices that are still in current practice. She has influenced many nursing theorist and prevailing theories during her career. Many of her changes continue to influence theory development today.
However, Florence Nightingale changed nursing practice, where she was commonly referred to as lady of the lamp (Finkelman and Kenner, 2013). Nightingale established a domestic mode of nursing training in which education of nurses was about the information of character at the Saint Thomas Hospital (Carol, 2011). According to Nightingale the tasks of every nurse was not only to care for the sick but to act as a public agent of moral reform, and to weaken the power of medical men (Nelson, 2010). Rafferty (1996) argue that, nursing
Nursing theory is vital to the nursing profession because it provides a foundation and framework which is reflected in nurses’ caring ideals and practice (William, 2015). Theory provides an understanding of a nurse’s role within the healthcare system. The first nursing theory, formed by Nightingale, was observations of interventions that improved patient outcomes (Mackey & Bassendowski, 2016). Nurses can improve quality of care by implementing theory into their practice (Mackey & Bassendowski, 2016). This paper will discuss the importance of nursing theory, Florence Nightingale’s Notes on Nursing: What It Is and What It Is Not, and the application of this theory in the nurse
According to the American Nurses Association, nursing is defined as “protection, promotion, and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations”. My philosophy of nursing revolves mainly on this definition and the importance to treat patient as a whole. Florence Nightingale has been my theorist of choice because her idea of healing a person as a whole and not just their physical. I have added Jean Watson nursing theorist because her believe of caring is central to nursing practice and this aligns with my beliefs.
Florence Nightingale was an admirable leader because despite her gender she kept striving for what she wanted in a world ruled by men. She had determination, honesty, integrity, and respect from her peers. She fought diligently for women to receive an education and developed renowned ways of how to prevent and treat illnesses. She made improvements that benefited society, the population and as well as her peers. She was a leader that put others before herself and wanted equal success for all. She was committed to her mission and with that she showed that a nurse should have compassion. This relates to nursing being both an art and a science. She emphasized the need for empathy, as she believed that being empathetic could also help improve with recovery. Nightingale took initiative in the work she did and as a leader you need to take action and be proactive. An important contribution Nightingale made that has impacted our education and also improved the environment was her hadnwashing theory. She implemented hand hygiene and that helped prevent infection and illnesses. Florence Nightingale is an example of which nurses should follow. We must be leaders and take action. Nursing is not just a job, but it is a profession where you protect the rights of others and at the same time help people in their
The nursing theory consists of four major concepts including person, health, environment, and nursing. According to the Fundamentals of Nursing, these four concepts “… give nurses a comprehensive perspective that allows you to identify and treat patient’s health care needs at all levels and in all health care settings.” (Potter & Perry, 2009, p. 40) Florence Nightingale’s theory was one of the first models for nursing. The focus of this theory was that nursing consists of caring through the environment and helping the patient overcome their symptoms and changes in function related to their prevailing illness. It also focuses on the manipulation on the environment for the potential benefit of the patient. Florence “… had always seen to the heart of things- that the real nurse must be a dedicated being- that
As a result, it allows us to create an intervention applicable for that particular situation for the better health of the patient. APN should not only use nursing theory but also incorporate theories from other professions (Kenny, 2013). Some of the theories of other disciplines are Piaget’s cognitive development theory, Erikson’s stage of development, health promotion or disease prevention models etc. All these theories have been applied to nursing. APN who are aware of theories of different discipline along with nursing will be able to utilize the model appropriate for the clients based on their illnesses and context (Kenny, 2013). I agree with the statement because health belief model, transtheoritical model and stages of change, social cognitive theory are the common public health theory which is applied in nursing as well. For instance, stages of changes are frequently used in smoking cessation patient. Also, APN can either use some or all of each theory. Whenever we are learning about theory for the first time, it might create confusion, anxiety and
After evaluating what the nursing concepts mean to me, I found that they are most similar to Florence Nightingale’s theory. For the first concept of nursing, I think it is the holistic care of individuals to provide an optimal level of health and function, comfort, safety, and education. With holistic care, nurses focus on the mind, body, and spirit. Not only does nursing deal with caring for the individual, but also education is a large part of nursing. To me, the second concept of nursing,
In general people’s perception, nursing is a profession about caring for sick people. According to the Florence Nightingale (Alligood, 2013) nursing is to be accountable for other people’s health condition. Nursing theorist
Florence Nightingale is recognized as the first nurse theorist. She described nursing as both an art and a science. She recommended adjusting the environment to improve the person’s health. Theory development began with
Florence Nightingale, a well-educated nurse, was recruited along with 38 other nurses for service in a hospital called Scutari during the Crimean War in 1854 . It was Nightingale's approaches to nursing that produced amazing results. Florence Nightingale was responsible for crucial changes in hospital protocol, a new view on the capabilities and potential of women, and the creation of a model of standards that all future nurses could aspire towards.
