Contraception (also known as birth control or fertility methods) are methods or devices used to prevent pregnancy. However, some of these methods are more effective than others. One method of contraception are birth control pills. Birth control pills are pills that contain hormones. Since it contains hormones it changes the way the body works, and prevents pregnancy. The hormones that are used to prevent pregnancy in this method of contraception are, estrogen and progestin. Most of the control pills that are used have both estrogen and progestin. Estrogen and progestin are man made hormones used to reduce the possibility of pregnancy. Although, sometimes there is only one hormone used for birth control pills. A woman cannot get pregnant if there is no egg to be fertilized. The hormones suppress the pituitary gland which stops the development and release of the egg in the ovary. This is ovulation. Although, birth control pills are very effective in this situation, they come with side effects. These side effects include nausea, weight gain, sore or swollen breasts, lighter periods, and mood changes. These side effects are more common but less serious than some other side effects. These other side effects include, abdominal pain, chest pain, headaches, eye problems (blurry visions), and swelling or aching in legs or thighs. This is why when you are on the pill it is crucial that you have a backup plan in case for any reason the birth control pill does not follow through with its regular procedure. For example, a backup plan would be a condom. Two contraceptive methods like this decreases the chances of a woman getting pregnant more than the use of only one contraceptive method.
There is another thing to look out for when you are on birth control pills. Birth control pills contain an expiration date. Although they have expiration dates, this does not signify that they are of no use. This only signifies that the effectiveness of the pills are
