The Vietnam War was the longest war in the history of the United States it lasted from 1959-1975. Billions of dollars was spent trying to win and unwinnable war. Countless of lives were lost and America failed to achieve its objective. The origins of the war stem from the Indochina wars that occurred in the late 40s and early 50s. After many years of colonial war, the Viet Minh a communist group led by Ho Chi Minh sought independence for Vietnam. The French were not reluctant to let go of their crowning jewel without a fight. The French were aided militarily by the Unites States who sought the membership of France to the NATO and were willingly to provide as much aid to ensure that they won the war and Vietnam did not fall to communism. This led to an eight year war which culminated with the defeat of the French at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu. A cease fire was issued and peace agreements known as the Geneva Accords where drawn during the 1954 Geneva Conference. The agreement issued a temporary division of Vietnam along the 17th parallel which created a Communist North Vietnam led by Ho Chi Minh and a democratic South Vietnam led by prime minister Ngo Dinh Diem. Vietnam was supposed to unify after the nationwide election of 1956 which Diem refuse to acknowledge.

The Vietnam War is a war that took place in Vietnam. The war was a particularly interesting war because it resulted in a previous unheard of result: the United States of America outright losing a war. This war was a war that was symbolic of one between democracy (good) and communism (bad). Vietnam was and still is a country that is run through communist rule. At the time, there was a democratic minority and this group was funded by other countries that were currently democratic. The United States in particular saw this as an opportunity to help Vietnam become a more democratic state.

In 1974, for full independence and the unification of Vietnam, North Vietnam fought with South Vietnam and United States who had been supported the South. The US had a stated goal of preventing the takeover of the "democratic" South by the "communist" North. It affected many lives. Thousands of people died or were injured from traumatic war. Vietnam war lasted almost two decades. It cost US financially and by the number of lives lost due to the war.

The Vietnam War was a humbling and costly war for the United States. Although many assumed it would be a quick war due to the battle being in a third world country, the United States troops were unprepared for the type of war that would be fought. The techniques and strategies used to fight the North Vietnamese Army and Vietcong were too conventional to fight guerrilla warfare. Politically, the war was a disaster both in Vietnam and in the United States.

For a while there was really only one scene, the main scene. In some eyes, society had a way prior to the 60 's to fixate only on what certain people thought were appropriate. Aspects such as the masculinity of America, white prowess, and the professional look, in a sense plagued America and beyond. Also, the United State 's government was war hungry, after WW2 we put ourselves in conflicts: the Korean War, Vietnam War, and the Cold War. These were truly scary times for the people. Fast forward to the 70 's, the Vietnam War, and the Cold War is still taking a toll on our country. Everyone was sick of this and the youth did not want a fight for simply just adding toll numbers to death. This influenced culture immensely and while this was all happening a new breed of ideas were brewing. A new wave of substances became obtainable and people took a hold of these which as we now know changed the face of that generation of people and further rippling out to others. The psychedelia wave arrived and forever society norms changed, how people treated people changed, and Rock & Roll changed at a time that was screaming for change. In the beginning there was LSD, the influence of this drug can be seen in many forms. Mainly LSD had the altering effect that can be seen, but, many other drugs had its place among the groups of people. The LSD influences can be seen in music videos, can be listen to in music, and the idea of hippies was sure shaped my LSD.

The Vietnam War is the longest war fought in America’s history (1954-1973). The Vietnam War occurred because North Vietnam followed Communist ideas and the United States followed democratic ideas. The North wanted to interfere with the South into becoming Communist but the U.S did their best to reduce or eliminate the North interference in South Vietnam. The Vietnam War was the first ever war to be shown on television. Although the U.S won the battle, the T.V exposed the horrors and struggles of the war. It seemed like the U.S was just killing random people for no reason. It made a lot of people question whether the U.S was the good or bad side. During the war, there was a theory “Domino Effect/Theory, that basically meant that once one fell under communism than the others would fall too. This war was extremely difficult because they were fighting in a forest. There were trees and bushes and everything would block the sight of the soldiers. So there was Guerilla Warfare which meant unconventional fighting, surprise attacks and ambush. Helicopters were extensively used. It was a fast in and an easy out. After the Tet Offensive, people started to distrust the government and increased the number of protests. There were war-hawks and doves. They were two completely different groups. One was anti-war and the other was pro-war. The war made a drastic impact in American Culture. Especially with the American people. The Vietnam War created division. (History.com)

Good evening and thanks for tuning in to the ABC, I am your host for this evening Josh Jacquet, and on today’s show we will be continuing our series on the topic of the Cold war but today we will be exploring the Vietnam War into detail. The topic that will be discussed tonight is that towards the end of the twentieth century the amount of democratic countries had quintupled. This was not expected at the beginning of the twentieth century. Now the question is Did the US use the cold war to further spread democracy to other countries and also contain the spread of communism? We will be exploring how the Vietnam War had an effect on this. Just in case you don’t know what the Vietnam war is, the Vietnam war is a military conflict that spanned from 1954-1975 and was between the Communist forces of North Vietnam which was led by the communist leader named ho chi minh who wanted to unite north and south to be ruled as a communist ruled democratic republic. He was supported by China and the Soviet Union. The non-Communist forces of South Vietnam led by Ngô Đình Diệm were supported by the United States.
