A test of faith: Signs Stuck on the death of Colleen Hess, the Hess family undergoes great struggles internally and externally, building the movie as a whole. Through the characters issues, philosophy and the home invasion panned out in the film, comes out a story of a test of faith in the movie Signs by M. Night Shyamalan. The director combines all of these components to formulate a strong movie and effectively send across the story of a test of faith.
The movie follows a family of four, the dad named Graham, his two kids Morgan and Bo, and their uncle named Merrill. The family is still struggling with many issues. Once the family returns upstairs they find one last alien in their home holding Morgan who unconscious due to his asthma attack. Graham, Merrill, and Bo all stare at the alien, and Graham has a flashback to the last words that were exchanged between him and his wife as she was dying. She says “Tell Merrill to swing away” and “Tell Graham to see”. Coming back from this flashback, Graham realizes that he needs to see the signs and tells Merrill to swing away, referencing him to take his bat and swing away at the alien. As Merrill swings away on the alien, the alien is killed from the water falling on him that Bo had left throughout the house. Graham rushes Morgan outside where he begins to give his son asthma medication. Morgan recovers from his asthma attack where he says, “Dad? What happened? Did someone save me?” and Graham responds back with “Yeah, baby, I think someone did.” This scene shows how Graham has seen all of the signs and seen that miracles do
M. Night Shyamalan's film Signs is about a man whose faith is tested by an unforeseen tragedy. To get through this test Graham must keep his eyes open for the signs that God has planted throughout. He must understand that everything that is happening to him ,both the good and the bad, serves a greater purpose that will come to light when he finally is able to see.
