This condition has become such a normal part of society that episodes of television shows, such as The Simpsons and South Park, have been created to make the condition and the drugs used to treat it seem humorous. These drugs, such as Ritalin and Concerta, are strong stimulants classified as Schedule II prescription drugs. Although these drugs can, to some extent, help children in focusing their attention, they are not the most effective way of treating attention deficit disorder.
ADD is a condition in which a child has trouble paying attention. What exactly causes ADD is unknown; however, some suggested causes of ADD include the consumption of the artificial sweetener aspartame, vitamin deficiencies, head trauma, and exposure to harmful substances like lead and nicotine while the mother is pregnant. Despite the fact that ADD does not have a clear cause, many scientists believe that ADD might be linked to an underdeveloped brain and nervous system. This would suggest that as the child ages and his brain and nervous system matures, the impulsive behaviors will eventually go away.
