The closest friend to Silas Deane was his “personal secretary” Edward Bancroft. Possibly Silas Deane was the only American that knew that Bancroft was a double spy. There were allegations whether or not Bancroft was a double spy but never really came to a conclusion. It wasn’t until later when historians figured out that Bancroft was a double spy after all. Bancroft was also an expert on poisons such as “Woorara” and other poisons. Bancroft wrote a book on the natural history of Guiana and ended up discovering the poison and he also knew how to use the poison as well.
Bancroft had all the means to kill Silas Deane. Deane could have potentially known that Bancroft was double spy. Bancroft might not have been willing to take to the risk. Although
John Proctor and Arthur Dimmesdale are exceptionally similar characters despite the fact that each was written about in very different eras. Both characters lived in the same time period, however, The Scarlet Letter was written in the late 1800’s, and The Crucible was written in the 1950’s. One cannot look at the qualities of Proctor and Dimmesdale without discussing each author and the time period in which each story was written. Despite minor differences, Proctor and Dimmesdale are very similar characters.
His story reveals a lot about himself as well as Deane. The reason why Deane contacted Bancroft when he was going to England was so Congress’s Committee of Secret Correspondence had “a good source of information about British war plans” (23). As mentioned earlier, Arthur Lee did accuse Deane of using his position to make a profit for himself, but that was just an accusation up until now. Apparently Deane was
During the Revolutionary War while Bancroft and Deane lived together in France Edward Bancroft acted as a double agent (p. xxvi) for the United States and England. Deane, who was living with Bancroft at the time (p. xxv), could have easily known about Bancroft’s dealings. In order to clean his own reputation with the United States, Deane would have had to gain back their trust somehow. If he used his hypothetical knowledge of Bancroft’s double-crossing for his own purposes it would have surely put him back into the United States’ favor. If Deane went back to the United States, Bancroft would have a possibility of being publically ousted as a traitor. Killing Deane would have prevented any opportunity of the sort from arising. With the motive to kill Deane, Bancroft becomes a suspect for his possible
The American Revolution saw the rise of the American spy, and the father of these spies was George Washington, commander in Chief of the Continental Army. The siege of New York demonstrated the importance and dire need for an intelligence to General Washington. Unfortunately, the difficulty, at least initially, lay with finding people willing and able to serve in this manner.
Later, we found out that Silas Deane’s long time friend Edward Bancroft was double-dealing of sorts, Bancroft was a known spy to the Americas but no one knew that he was also a spy for the British as well until British documents from that time were released to the public library; we then learned that Edward Bancroft was on the payroll as a spy for the British. Then several wondered if Deane knew that his long time friend was a double spy, many believed so. After learning more into the friendship of these
Although Hale’s overall goal was to bring justice and protect those who were innocent, Giles Corey’s only priority was to protect his wife from being falsely convicted of being involved in witchery. Corey’s guilt is intensified when, because of his comment about his wife’s reading habits, she is accused of being a witch. Believing that his comment might lead to her ultimate demise, Giles Corey heads to the court with Nurse, Hale, and Proctor to plead his wife’s case. Once in the court, Corey attempts to bring to light the fact that greed and selfishness are the motivation for the accusations of many of those convicted of being witches. He even believes that this is the cause for his wife as well stating that “Thomas Putnam is reaching out for
We should not judge people by their peak of excellence; but by the distance they have traveled from the point where they started”(Henry Ward Beecher). In 1692 Salem, Massachusetts Madness is consuming Salem, and everyone is accused of being with the devil. John Proctor’s affair with Abigail jump starts the witch hunts. In the Crucible Arthur Miller embodies Proctor as a tragic hero with many flaws but his fatal flaw was his pride which caused his demise. Throughout the play we witness Proctor’s transformation as a person from a sinful remorseless adulterer, repentant, and to an honorable man.
How is the character of Mrs Hayward developed throughout the opening 3 chapter of Frayn’s ‘Spies’?
"How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave my name!" (Proctor) John Proctor a farmer, and the husband of Elizabeth. He had an affair with Abigail Williams while she worked as a servant in his house. John is a powerful man in both build and character. " John Proctor is a tormented individual. He believes his affair with Abigail irreparably damaged him in the eyes of god, his wife Elizabeth, and himself. True, Proctor did succumb to sin and commit adultery; however he lacks the capacity to forgive himself." Many individuals have flashbacks after experiencing trauma. Survivors of such horrible traumas sometimes can act out in violence, after something triggers them to remember the ordeal. The novel The Suspect by L.R. Wright, offers a realistic account of what goes on in the mind of an individual who has committed murder. Throughout the novel, I made connections to many real life examples of how trauma has affected the lives of criminals and their victims, through either alcohol or mental illness. Individuals affected by this sort of trauma can seek medical or social help in order to be able to learn how to cope with daily living.
“Non-medical prescribing is prescribing which is taken by a health professional who is not a doctor” (Non-medical prescribing 2012).To become a non-medical prescriber the relevant training must be undertaken to ensure the patients’ safety is most important. The health care professional who is the non-medical prescribers is only legally allowed to prescribe within their area of expertise and they must remain competent within that area, through maintenance of various continuing education and training programmes.
With the world's largest volunteer fighting force in its service, America has long been a nation that kneels in bowed reverence to the service of our military men and women. National monuments stand as enduring testaments to the sacrifices made by ordinary citizens when political action dictates that war must be waged, and holidays commemorate the fallen who laid their lives down in defense of their homeland. Nonetheless, the storm clouds of crisis have begun to gather as the nation winds down its operations in two disparate fields of battle, with a decade of continuous warfare finally ending in Iraq and de-escalation occurring rapidly in Afghanistan. The devastating effects of a prolonged economic recession have crippled many segments of the federal government, but the crucial programs and departments associated with providing healthcare services to active military members and veterans have become severely overburdened by the extraordinary influx of soldiers returning from the Middle East as casualties of war. From amputees coping with the loss of one or more limb after an improvised explosive device attack, to veterans of so-called "stop-loss" deployment schedules who suffer from the invisible wounds of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and the thousands of soldiers with injuries and illnesses attributed to their service, America has positioned itself precariously on the precipice of domestic disaster the likes of which have
Love is a neurochemical con job that sustains people. Many people are influenced from their abundance or lack of love. This influence can lead to bettering a person’s life or destroying their life. Frankenstein is a prime example of someone who grew up surrounded by love and his choices still led him to make horrible decisions.
“Glory” and “Scandal”, or in other words, Mary and John, two characters from the novel “The Secret Lives of Sgt. John Wilson” who fall in love but eventually end their relationship on a tragic note. Many events occurred through-out the novel that caught my interest such as; the way they fell madly in love, the transition into John becoming more of a ghost than a husband, then a more twisted unforeseen plot that caught most readers entirely by surprise. The love affairs between the characters in the novel, plus the twists and turns you experience while reading is the main contributor as to why I love this book. Two polar opposites who started a life together, followed by scandal and deceit, then ended in a most unspeakable way.
HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus, which with time will lead to AIDS. AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. HIV/AIDS is the most destructive health crisis of modern times. (“How HIV and AIDS Affect Populations”) This virus came from chimpanzees who had SIV (Simian Immunodeficiency Virus), which was transmitted to humans and mutated into HIV. (“What is HIV/AIDS?”) HIV enters the bloodstream through mucous membranes. HIV can enter through the lining of the rectum, walls of the vagina, and the urethra, which is the passageway to the penis. HIV can also enter through the nose, mouth, and throat. (“Having HIV-AIDS is Like a Death Sentence”)
