Introduction
The hippie aesthetic implies a song has a message to convey to the listening audience by any means at their disposal (Covach & Flory, 2015). My interpretation of this would be exemplified in the song “War” by Edwin Starr released in 1970 on his album titled “War and Peace”. Written as a protest against the Vietnam War (War by Edwin Starr), the listener cannot misinterpret the intended message. Most songs are not as direct as to their meaning but are none the less passionate about the topic. “Silent Running” by Mike and the Mechanics is one such song. Other songs are not as ‘global’ in their message but take on a personal connotation and elicit the listener’s emotions, such as “Time After Time” by Cyndi Lauper.

Originally written because there was a need for one more song on the album, Lauper and Hyman would stay after the days recording was finished and work on this song. Both writers were in personal relationships “and somehow the lyrics just started to come out” (Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper).
The hippie aesthetic in not as prevalent in “Time After Time” as in many songs instead of being about global issue as most would believe, this song keeps to a personal level. Relationship stresses and normal day to day life struggles are brought to the surface as the listener hears this song. Everyone at some time of other has dealt with troubled relationships and endured the ending of that relationship. “Time after Time” brings that emotion to the surface and the listener relives those
