The French and American revolutions were both countries fighting for independence, almost one after another, the American first, and then the French. Both were very similar, while also, very different. Both were inspired by Enlightenment thinkers, and both involved citizens against the king. The French revolutionists were inspired by the American patriots.
First, both had a Continental Congress. In 1774, the Patriots had a Continental Congress. In this Continental Congress, they discussed how to rebel against King George III. In the French Revolution, it was called the National Assembly. In 1789, the French Patriots had their National Assembly, where they discussed tyrannical acts performed by the King, and their plot to get the acts repealed. Bastille Day celebrates a turning point in the French Revolution, the storming of Bastille Prison in 1789. In America, we celebrate Independence Day, or the day when the colonists declared independence from Great Britain in 1776. Both are celebrated in similar ways, with the French and Americans celebrating with fireworks and parades. Also, both points in the war were one of the riskiest moves both countries made. Declaring independence was treason, punishable by death, and storming Bastille could have caused the King to have a violent attack on the citizens. Therefore, both are similar.
Both countries also had a similar hierarchy. For example, the French First Estate was made up of members of the Church, just like Parliament's House of Lords. The French Second Estate was made up of nobles, and the House of Commons was made up of elected men. The Third Estate was made up of all of the other citizens, who paid the most in taxes, without power in government. The American colonists paid the most in taxes, without power in government, showing similar hierarchies among the two rebellious
