This paper will discuss the cultural dimensions of two countries. It will describe how they are different and similar and how businesses in each country would do business together. It will also discuss the communications and cost of doing business.
Similarities and Differences Canada and Italy are only truly similar when it comes to individualism with Canada at 80 and Italy at 76. Second in line would be power distance with Canada at 39 and Italy at 50. With regard to the other dimensions, they are different (see below).
• Masculinity: Canada – 52; Italy – 70
• Uncertainty Avoidance: Canada – 48; Italy – 75
• Long Term Orientation: Canada – 36; Italy - 61
• Indulgence: Canada – 68; Italy - 30

Italy has a higher score in masculinity so would be “driven by competition, achievement and success, with success being defined by the ‘winner’ or ‘best-in-the-field’” (Canada in comparison with Italy) whereas Canada is considered moderately masculine and would still strive for “high standards in performance” (Canada in comparison with Italy). Canadians wouldn’t be as competitive and are concerned with work-life balance. For uncertainty avoidance, Canada (being low) would be more accepting of uncertainty making them more open to “new ideas, innovative products and a willingness to try something new or different” (Canada in comparison with Italy) unlike Italy that would be more rigid and not as open to new ideas or innovation (wanting to stay in the safe zone). For long term orientation, Canada would be more focused on traditions, low propensity to save, and quick results (Canada in comparison with Italy) whereas Italy would be focused on trying something new (more adaptable to change). For indulgence, Canada scored high so would be more apt to have less restraints – more willing have fun, enjoy life, and be optimistic (Canada in comparison with Italy) whereas Italy would have more restraints based on social norms (maintaining …show more content…
While innovation is good, a Canadian company may overspend due to their low uncertainty avoidance – resulting in the cost of a product possibly being higher than it needs to be had they practiced some restraint or the cost being prohibitive to make a profit. At the same time, the Italian company may be too restrictive on costs so it would be up to the Canadian company to be prepared and have their back up to why these costs are justified and when the break-even and then profit point would begin. When it comes to a merger, the Italian company would want to consider the Canadian companies time off policies which may be more generous and which can increase human resource costs. The Italian company may also want to adjust communications to ensure they aren’t coming across as too directive (masculine). The Canadian company, on the other hand, will want to be more decisive in their communications with the Italian company so they come off as more structured. The Italian company would want to consider traditions of the Canadian culture versus pushing a change to them based on the fact that they are more flexible with their traditions. The Canadian company would also want to respect the work ethic of the Italian company and may need to work some extra hours if needed to get the relationship off the ground when it comes to negotiations and/or
Canada has grown and matured a lot throughout the past years and has developed a great independent country and nation since she separated from Britain in 1867. For Canada today, she has changed drastically due to what she endured and experienced in the past years. First of all, Canada proved themselves to be autonomous due to their contributions to World War 1 and World War 2 as an independent country. Secondly, Canada has proved themselves to be accepting due to their actions towards the minority groups and creating a just society. Lastly, Canada has proven itself to be dependable due to her role during the cold war as a middle power. Therefore, Canada’s past has shaped her identity as a middle power because she has matured and grown as a
The Romans had an impact on modern Canadian society through government too. Canada took up the idea of a democracy from the Romans, Rome used a representative government, meaning they would elect senators to speak for a group of people, which is where we got the idea from. Canada, as you can tell, admired the way the government was run in the Roman times, as Canada's way of running the government is very similar. For example, Rome Senates are required to be upper class citizens; this is not required anymore in Canada, but it once was. They also must approve of the laws before they are passed. Canada's consul and prime minister were also influenced incredibly by the Romans, as in Rome both the consul and the prime minister are selected by groups
When a company goes international, they will benefit from a number of factors. Going international will help businesses to meet consumer needs, create new jobs, attract investment, and develop new technologies. When a Canadian company becomes involved with a company from Spain, they must acknowledge the Spaniard culture, in order to experience the benefits of going global. Overall, Spain and Canada’s cultural determinants have many similarities. The two countries have similar climates, methods of transportation, dominant religious beliefs, and political systems, while still having a few differences.
Every community in Canada, whether it is large or small, is a gold mine of diversity, tradition, culture and much history. It’s the familiarity, knowledge of their heritage, and sense of belonging at school, work, home, or their place of worship, that strengthens their identity or who they are as Canadians. If someone identified as Canadian, it means they are a part of Canada’s society. To be Canadian means freedom. Canadians have the freedom to think for themselves, speak what they believe, and live their life with no limits. Because of this freedom, they have certain character traits and qualities. Simply, Canadians contain a certain Canadian attitude, the recognition of Canadian multiculturalism and prominently, Canadian pride.
Aside from these similarities, Italy and Canada do have many differences. The most obvious being the language barrier. Italy’s official language is Italian, however some people
The geography of Canada affects our culture considerably. Canada is located north of the United
Canada is presently known for welcoming many racial groups into the country. However, the Canadian government is not always giving out warm welcomes to different ethnicities. During World War Two, the country rejects many Japanese and Italians who are already Canadian. The treatment of the Japanese and Italians in the Second World War is very unjust. The two groups face being put into internment camps against their own will, the government separates families and force men to work on farms with little pay. The government of Canada also mistreat the Japanese and Italian Canadians because they are full of fear and superstition.
Canada is a country, proud of its culture and heritage. Canada is a country in North America alongside the United States and Mexico, boarded by the Arctic, Atlantic, and Pacific oceans. Particularly Canada is a multicultural, diverse country with two national languages consisting of French, as well as English. Although the language is diverse it is not the only element that changes across the country. In addition, Canada consists of just under ten million kilometers squared of land, which is the second largest landmass in the world. Likewise, Canada has everything from flat grass to beautiful mountains, sparse hills to large valleys with mesmerizing beauty. Something to consider about Canada and its success is the aspects of Canadian society, and what is contributing to the overall well-being of all Canadian citizens making Canada a great country to live in.
For my research paper I have chosen to compare two countries which have totally different cultures, Italy, and the United States of America. I decided to compare these countries for two reasons, the first being that as an Italian I can better point out the differences I have noticed living back and fourth in the US since a young age, and the second and main reason is because during our course we have been discussing on how bribing practices were banned and partially reintroduced in the U.S. due to unfair competition from foreign companies abroad.
Unemployment currently sits at a seven point two percent as of March two thousand thirteen. This is a slight increase recently but has gone down from about eight point seven percent back in two thousand nine, the labor force has also increased by roughly one million people since the middle of two thousand nine. There has been a big boom for Canada since the American financial crisis which definitely affected the livelihood of Canadian citizens. Canada is unique because it is officially a bilingual country. This is an important factor when considering doing business in Canada. Canada has a constitutional monarchy which also has three branches of parliamentary (Legislative, Executive, and Judicial). The head of state is Queen Elizabeth the second. Canada is one of the top ten trading countries in the world; they are a very globalized country. They have a varied culture in Canada a major factor in this may be because it has the highest immigrations rate per capita in the entire world. The country itself prides itself on the multiculturalism that it promotes as a society and as a government. They come from British and French ancestry but also have a big influence from the Canadian people that instantly make Canada a very diverse market. Canada also ranks eleventh highest in human development as of March two thousand thirteen according to a Human Development Index study conducted by the United Nations Development Program.
Canadian and American cultural views were different which was proved because one is multicultural and the other is not. Canada was known as “mosaic” which means immigrants from any ethnic group were accepted here and were allowed to practice their religion. Therefore, they have a double identity ,meaning they are their ethnic group before a Canadian citizen as in Japanese-Canadian, Asian Canadian and so on . Whereas ,American culture was known as the “melting pot “, where they accept other cultures however they encouraged their citizens to give up their original culture ( Wells ,10 and 11 ). Canadian’s usually describe themselves as “NOT AMERICAN“(Wells,35) . Many Americans view Canada as a positive nation and as a better environment to live in then the United States . A legal sectary from Gastonia ,North Carolina said “Canada’s such a terrific place, I’d move there tomorrow if I could” (Wells, 35). This proves that Americans want to come to Canada since it is a safer environment due to it’s unique culture. Canadians are recognized as more modest, less aggressive and more down to earth then their southern neighbors (Wells,35).
“Canadians of Italian descent should look overseas to get a more complete sense of their identities” (Paci 37).
What is Canada? What is a Canadian? Canada, to employ Voltaire's analogy, is nothing but “a few acres of snow.”. Of course, the philosopher spoke of New France, when he made that analogy. More recently, a former Prime Minister, Joe Clark, said that the country was nothing but a “community of communities”. Both these images have helped us, in one way or another, try to interpret what could define this country. On the other hand, a Canadian could be a beer, a hockey-playing beaver or even a canoe floating in a summer day's sunset. A Canadian could also be a “sovereigntyphobe”, refusing to see the liquefaction, albeit political, of the second largest country in the world.
When examining the differences between the two Alberta's, it's important to examine each of their environments growing up. Like so many women, Alberta the
