In many short stories, we normally read and discover the relationships between man and woman. Here the relationship of men and women in 2 short stories: Cat in The Rain and Hills Like White Elephants and the comparison between these characters is going to be discussed.
In Hills like White Elephants they are not a couple, but in the Cat in the rain, it is obvious that they are a married couple.
In the first story the male character is called American but we do not know about the girl, but in the later both of them are American. In the first one, the female character seems Helpless, confused; she changes her idea about the surrounding. One time she expresses her idea about the clouds, which look like White elephants and later she denies it.

In both works one of the characters is a girl and she wants something, she was looking for something. ''Cat in the Rain" - " And I want to eat at a table with my own silver and I want candles. And I want it to be spring and I want to brush my hair out in front of a mirror and I want a kitty and I want some new clothes"(170) "Hills like white Elephants" - "Could we try it? "We want two Anis del Toro", "I wanted to try this new drink"(274) In both stories Characters a little bit nervous. "Cat in the Rain" - "I get so tired of it", she said. "I get so tired of looking like a boy"(169) "Hills like white Elephants" - "I love you now, You know I love you" - "I know. But if I do it, then it will be nice again if I say things are like white elephants, and you'll like it?" - "I'll love it. I love it now but I just can't think about it. In hills like White Elephants, they are in a bar in an unknown train station’s bar. There is a contrast between hills and barren valleys; only there are some clouds around, metaphorically like life and death. Still the location of Cat in the Rain is a small coastal Italian village and the couple are in a hotel, cause it is raining outside.
Looking at the two stories we can find out a few comparative viewpoints. Both of them are about couples and the difference is that in Cat in the Rain, they are married, but the quality of the relationships in both of the look alike. In Hills like White Elephants, one can assume that, they seemingly never had a profound loving relationship, while in the other they might have had, only that they got colder gradually as the years passed away. In both relationships man behaves superior to the woman. It is more noticeable, since the first couple is confronting an extraordinary choice where the man is hesitant to have an unwanted child, so he decides indirectly on abortion. In the second story, there is no sign that the lady is pregnant maybe because of the man unwillingness to submit himself to this marriage. Maybe he can't make sense of his own life, yet even not able to accept paternity
