Similarities Between John Updike's A & P

There a many different kind of people in this world, some have good hearts, while others, not so much. Sammy, From John Updike’s “A&P” is a good example of someone with what could be called a good heart. William, from Jane Martin’s “Tattoo” would be an example of someone who would not have a good heart. Both only human and trying to live the life they want, but with two different approaches. Sammy is a small town Grocery store clerk just outside of Boston, he is at a stage in his life where he sees people around him living normal lives and is not sure if he wants to lead the same life. They both want something and go to extensive lengths the acquire them, and in the end they both fail to achieve their goals. However, they do seem to have more differences. Sammy wants to raise his status in the world and brake outside of the norm, while William seems content with where he is, seeing as he is a lawyer and has three girlfriends. Sammy makes an attempt to be noble and stand up for the girls when his manager chastises them for being in swimming suits, William is more of a coward and refuses to take responsibility for what he has done when his three girls confront him. Sammy, in the end, is jobless and the girls are already gone making his somewhat noble act all for nothing. As for William, the story ends just before he makes a decision to lose his job and ruin his career, or have a tattoo explaining all the sneaky things he did to three girls in his past. Either way, neither of the stories have a very happy ending. While Sammy might now be free to attempt to break out of his social norm and is no longer in a negative work environment, he still stands a big chance of being a disappointment to his family and cause them to be pushed further into poverty seeing as he was apparently already having to work to help support them. William, while he mat deserve what he gets either way. Will be left with a mysterious letter to explain which could very well end his career, or be left with something that will surely make a good story for any other girls he happens to attract, especially when they ask if he has any
