Differences Between Populist And Progressives

During the era of reform and reaction, the Populist Movement and the Progressives had many things in mind. Both the Populist Movement and the Progressives had the same goals and intentions. The Populists and the Progressivists both intended to unite together to improve the conditions of farmers and the people in the lower class brackets, as compared to their wealthier counterparts. The first and foremost difference between these two, was that the Progressives made headway toward their goals. While the Populist Movement had incentive to work for their goals, the Progressives championed over their opposing forces. Another difference, was that Progressivism was rooted in the middle class. This was not like the earlier Populist Movement that consisted of struggling farmers and workers. The American democracy, ideas, institutions, and political processes all changed in some way during the era of reform and reaction. American democracy was one of the most popular changes. It was the center to most political changes, as well as many new ideas for the nations democracy. Socially, with new forms of advertisement, they could more effectively use propaganda to their advantage. Though even with propaganda, they still could not win the hearts of many thousands of poor citizens. Economically, the Supreme Court Justices were successful in helping with economic downfalls in some poor farmers, etc. Although this was true, shortly after, an economic crash occurred, sending the entire process spiraling downward. Politically, reform movements gained much needed power. Presidential power was increased in order to lead in a proper manner, but was limited by often being treated as a joke, and ended by an election that won by over 1 million
