Love and conflict are explored in both Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story
Romeo and Juliet is a play written by William Shakespeare. It is a story about two star crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet, who take their precious lives but there are also two family’s who have a feud between each other. West Side Story, directed by Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise. West
Side Story is a modern day Romeo and Juliet, there are two gangs, The Jets and The Sharks that’s set in Manhattan. The two lovers are tony who is apart of the Jets and Maria who is a Shark. Love and conflict appear in both of these plays, they’re both really similar in the grand scheme of things.
The romantic tale of Romeo and Juliet shows plenty of the emotion love. Love can be seen throughout many characters but the most predominant people are Romeo and Juliet. A quote from the text Romeo and Juliet; “You are a lover, borrow Cupid’s wings and soar with them beyond the common bound.” This quote is directed at Romeo, the person is saying Romeo is ready for love and he needs to take the opportunity when he gets it. Love is shared out in the play, there is also a lot of hatred but the love gets spread around, eventually. Love is a very big influence and statute in the text, it also gave West Side Story a lot of inspiration. Love also holds a large impact on the outcome of the play. This means Romeo and Juliet is related to love and is comparable to West
