In Tulsa, Oklahoma, the streets were often ridden with gangs. The gangs ruled the streets and alleyways. They often used slang talking to each other. There were two major gangs at the time, the Greasers and the Socs.
The Greasers were named after their greasy hair that they used oil and wax on. An extreme Greaser was called a Stone Greaser. They rode motorcycles and wore leather jackets. They also wore white t-shirts, jeans with rolled up cuffs, and motorcycle boots. The were influenced by Elvis Presley, Marlon Brando, and James Dean.
Socs was an abbreviation for socials. They were known as the social butterflies and the rich kids. They had nice clothes and cars. They were high in social status as well. They wore buttoned up t-shirts, ties,
As stated in the text, Hinton writes “Things were rough all over”(Hinton 35). This explains that everyone has problems no matter who you are or where you came from, everyone has issues no matter how big or small. Therefore, Greasers and Socs are very much alike. In addition, the article “The Allure of Gangs” clarifies that “Being in a gang may also satisfy their need for attention and provide someone who will listen to and care about them”(“The Allure of Gangs” on page 40). Given that, majority of the kids that are in the gangs, come from difficult homes, so they tend to be closer to their gang members than their family
Socs are the opposing character group in the book that the greasers dont like nor hangout with. Bob is a soc and he is kind of the leader/captain of the socs
The Socs and Greasers are complete opposites but they both have some of the same problems. In the book “The Oudsiders “by S.E Hinton, the main person join a gang but the gang has a enemy gang, the Socs. The socs are different to the Greasers but they both have some of the same problems. Some of the same problems the face is family issues, pressure from friends, and alcohol.
I’m going to be inventorying, identifying, describing, and looking. I’m going to start of with the author S.E Hinton, I noticed she went right into the story without any backstory or background i've noticed from discussions a lot people don’t like that she went straight into the story, I wanted to mention that because it was very disliked in many discussions. I also wanted to speak on what caused the rivalry between socs and greasers, there was a lot that S.E Hinton left out that many readers were wanting know. There are many examples of S.E Hinton not giving background, explaining, or even just stating something better. Don’t get me wrong all together the book was really good, there was just some things that could have been stated better
Gangs were a huge part of the 1920s/30s, and were first formed during the prohibition era. When the 18th amendment was ratified, there was even more crime and violence than intended. People would do anything for alcohol, so these gangs practically took care of that and made huge amounts of money. Even when prohibition was over, gang remained intact. Some famous gangsters, beides Bonnie and Clyde, were Al Capone, Baby Face Nelson, and Machine Gun Kelly.
However, the Soc are looked as these rich, smart people. The Soc don’t act their own self they try to be someone who they aren’t. They make sure not to show their true self. “Soc were always behind a wall of aloofness” [Doc C]. The Soc act the same as the greasers, but they are rich.
It seems like we’re always searching for something to satisfy us, and never finding it.” This quote is from chapter 3 and it is taken from the part of the story where Two-Bit, Johnny, and Ponyboy are walking Cherry and Marcia home from the drive-in and get confronted by Bob and Randy, their boyfriends. Cherry mentions that they were drunk and that is why she and Marcia left them. They insist that they weren’t, but Cherry’s story says otherwise. A fight almost occurs but Cherry stops it because of her hatred of the clashes between the Socs and Greasers. Afterwards, Johnny and Ponyboy go to the lot and accidentally fall asleep. When Johnny wakes Ponyboy up, Pony freaks out about Darry will do. Ponyboy gets home and finds Darry and Soda waiting for him. They all start yelling and Darry accidentally hits Ponyboy, causing Pony to run out of the house and ask Johnny to run away with him.
Throughout the movie, the scenery is focused on the north side of Tulsa, the Greaser’s territory. There is quite a bit of strain involved for Greasers. They usually come from poor neighborhoods as depicted in the movie, you notice houses close together, garbage on the lawns and the vehicles in the neighborhood are beaten up and rusty. A lot of jealousy is directed to the Socs’ who live in their
The 1960’s or 1970’s is when gangs were originated. Gangs became a formation of protection against racial crimes being committed by whites. There were quite a few popular gangs such as the Slausons,
Gangs have existed in the United States for over 200 years. It all started when the first immigrants came to the U.S.A. Most of them came for a better life but many of them ended up in poverty. The first gangs were formed among poor adolescents who grouped together for the sake of socialisation and protection. They were of the same race or the same ethnic background. The first known gang specialized in crimes was called "The Five Points". They consisted of Irish immigrants and was established in New York City. They dressed in a specific way and used monikers or nicknames. Another early gang were the "Forty Thieves". Their gang leader was Edward Coleman and they formed in 1826. New York City's early gangs had an easy time of it because of
Greasers are the main stereotype in the book but also there is a small part played by the Socs. Although the book is about the life and times of a Greaser there is also a ‘Socs Story’ in there, as throughout the book you learn more and more about the Socs and how they live. But this all changes. When Bob dies Cherry and Randy, the main Socs characters, begin to see that there is no difference between Socs and Greasers. Randy, when he talks to Ponyboy in private doesn’t call
Some of the clothes that they wore were: fitted T-shirts with the sleeves rolled up or ringer t-shirts, leather or denim jackets, black or blue jeans with rolled up cuffs, motorcycle or army boots, Chuck Taylors or all-stars, bandannas, chain wallets, black leather gloves and fedoras (The). Most of the greasers tried to replicate the clothing style of celebrities such as Elvis Presley and James Dean. One hairstyle that is seen everywhere and is automatically associated with greasers was the pompadour. To create this look they used products like Brylcreem, Vitalis Hair Tonic, Groom and Clean, Murray’s Pomade and Wildroot Cream Oil (Your).
On the other hand, the socs can be just as much the outsiders as the greasers. In Document C Ponyboy stated, “The Socs are always behind a wall of aloofness, careful not to let their real selves show through,” This means that the Socs were constantly masking their true identity
Since each community had their own gang, there were several of them. There was the Chinese, Irish, Jewish, and Italian gangs. Each gang had their own style. For example: there was the Dead Rabbits gang. They were known for attacking regular civilians in broad daylight. They got their name by the unforgettable dead rabbits they carried on sticks while beating people up.
There were conflicts between the Socs that conflicted with the greasers. They were two opposite groups that didn't get along. The Socs, "the jet-set...West-side rich kids, wear madras shirts, smell of English leather, and drive new sports cars..." (6). Socs were rich, while greasers were low class. "Soc" is an abbreviation of the Socials, which are the West-side rich kids. Socs had a better reputation than the greasers.
