In the Declaration of Independence it is stated that “all men are created equal”, which statement supposed to be the starter of the American Dream. This dream gives hope and opportunities to the poor people and also the immigrants believe in making fortune and becoming wealthy and successful. The Great Gatsby of F. Scott Fitzgerald perfectly describes the dream in accomplishing and real and sometimes disillusioning sides of the American Dream. In this case, Fitzgerald personal life and his novel closely related to the American Dream. Furthermore, it can be possible to draw a parallel between the life of the main character, Jay Gatsby and the writer, Fitzgerald. First of all, hoping to become successful, Nick Carraway moves to east and rents a house, but rather a bungalow in West Egg to have more opportunity to hit his target, to make fortune. It can be said that Nick can personalize perfectly with his character the American Dream. He is well-educated and lives among the riches but this does not mean that he is one of them. He is poor but with prospects he tries his luck and he hopes that with puritan work ethic and diligence he can be successful. As he gets acquainted with the wealthy people around him in East Egg and West Egg too, he slowly realizes that he does not belong to that superficial community and as a reaction for the disappointment he leaves that place. In addition, there is a similarity in between the characterization of Nick and the personal life of Fitzgerald. It can be said that Nick partly has the personality of the writer, both of them come from a poor family and disillusioned from the American Dream. It can also suggest that this connection is the reason why Nick is the proper person for the narration; he sees through quickly people around him, he can judge them often hard and he observes the dark side of American Dream,
