In the short stories “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin and “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, are stories about women who suffer from different conditions, but are very similar. In “The Story of an Hour” the main character suffers from an unknown heart condition, and becomes very detached from her husband. In “The Yellow Wallpaper” the main character suffers from a psychological condition, and is taken care of by her husband John but slowly grows away from his care. While these women may have very different situations, they are very similar in the way they grow away from their husbands, feeling oppressed by society, and wanting to feel free.

The stories of the Yellow Wallpaper and Story of an Hour are both stories that have deep meaning, and many hidden symbols. In both stories there is a woman who in some way is oppressed by some outside force and must find a way to overcome this oppression. In the story, “Hills Like White Elephants” written by Ernest Hemingway tells a dialogue story of a woman named Jig and the American man who is waiting at the train station for their ride to Madrid. Jig and the American man are having a casual conversation about the scenery that the nearby hills look like white elephants. Then, there conversation turns serious as they talk about their relationship and their future unborn child. In Ernest Hemingway’s story the character’s conversation is important because it represents the lifestyle of a carefree life of an adult, the decisions of their actions, and their unplan future.

In this essay I will be comparing the two short stories “The Story of an Hour” and “The Yellow Wallpaper”. “The Story of an Hour”, written by Kate Chopin, is centered around a woman by the name Louise Mallard and her reaction after being informed of her husbands “death”, On the other hand “The Yellow Wallpaper” Written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is about Jane, A young, newly married mother who at the time is undergoing care because of her depression. Although both essays have their similarities and differences I will be focusing mainly on the themes of Freedom, Isolation and Oppression. I will also be focusing on how the themes appear within both short stories and do a compare and contrast about the way the themes appear in the two short stories.

In Hills Like White Elephants, Ernest Hemingway uses controlled concise diction to develop a tension-filled tone, which characterizes the woman as a pushover to the man, revealing how society gives in to lust, blinding them from the love they desire.

The story has no internal monologue or deep explanations to express the characters thoughts, feelings and motives. Hemingway instead, uses symbols throughout his story to express the deeper meaning behind the American man and the girl’s conflicting decision.

At the heart of the story lies a couple's conflict over delivering or aborting an unborn child. On the surface, Jig's repeated comparison of the surrounding hills to white elephants seems little more than idle chit-chat. However, when viewed on a deeper level, Jig's white elephant references prove to be an extremely complicated symbol. In nature, a white elephant is both a valuable rarity and a costly burden.

In Ernst Hemingway’s story “Hills like White Elephants,” the male and female characters are portrayed in a stereotypical male dominated relationship. The male main character “the man” is portrayed as the influential character who is subtly persuading the main female character. The female main character “the girl” is portrayed as the passive and impressable character who can be swayed by “the man”. There are several examples of how “the man” uses his dominance in the relationship to persuade “the girl” to make a decision on whether or not to get an abortion.
