Most think that Gatsby and Tom are very different characters but they are the same in more ways than one would think. Both Gatsby and Tom use a lot of people in this novel. For example, Gatsby is only using Nick to get to Daisy. Gatsby uses other people as well; he only throws the parties to see if Daisy would come. Tom, like Gatsby, uses people. In “The Great Gatsby” Tom Buchanan had one of the despising personalities out of all the characters. Tom’s personality was a rude, impatient, and cruel type at the beginning. There were no reasons for him to act like that. At the very beginning Tom is one of the first characters that were introduced. The Great Gatsby and Ethan Frome are a novel and a movie written by two different authors, during two different time periods and may have seemed completely different. The main characters in these books, Ethan Frome and Jay Gatsby, appeared to be two distinct people, but in one aspect or another came together as one. Isolation from society, silence, and desire for something they cannot have are three similarities that bring these characters together.

The character in Of Mice and Men that is most similar to Tom Buchanan in The Great Gatsby is Curley. Curley and Tom Buchanan have many similarities throughout both books. These shared characteristics stem from one thing both men have an abundance of: privilege. The language several characters used revealed many instances of satire. Tom Buchanan speaks for one type of satire Fitzgerald displayed. Tom found a way in every and any conversation to tear down a woman or insert racial jokes. On page twelve, Tom asks if anyone had ever read The Rise of the Colored Empires. Then, he states “The idea is if we don’t look out the white race will be utterly submerged.” Then he claims this has been scientifically proven. This speaks to his lack of knowledge due to his smothering arrogance. Later on in the novel, Tom would refer to women as “its” and pronouns instead of addressing them by their names. Fitzgerald had Tom display this manly patriarchal role to make subtle hints of what a typical, upper class, white man thought during the historical context of when this book occurs.

Tom Buchanan is a villain, there's too much he’s done to deny the name. He has a mistress, and Daisy knows it: she barely conceals her knowledge of it. Completely being hypocritical, he suspects that Daisy may have a novel that angers him. He is a supremacist, and a pompous “thug” who has more money than values. And Tom sends Wilson after Gatsby, accusing Jay of Myrtle’s death (when Gatsby was innocent), and Wright kills Gatsby.

Tom Buchanan lives in the East Egg with Daisy Buchanan. Tom is married to Daisy Buchanan, Tom is an athlete from a college football player and he is a very racist and abusive man. He also isn’t loyal and very secretive with his own wife Daisy. Tom was also wealthy his whole life and basically got everything he ever wanted. Tom can be a really straight man and very rude to the people and his surroundings. Tom Buchanan is a really disrespectful man abusive when it comes to women. Tom leaves Daisy a bruise finger, Tom may not be as abusive to his wife but still hurts her with words and emotional damage. Tom doesn’t like when they talk about him nor his wife Daisy, Tom has hit Myrtle and has broken her nose because he was disrespecting Daisy and himself. “ making a short deft movement, Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand,” Tom doesn’t like to be shutted up or else he will shut you up. Gatsby is a really respectful man who has respect for one another and who is also loyal. Tom Buchanan is a strong, powerful, and forceful picture of a man who cares only about himself. He first meets Gatsby in the second half of the book because Gatsby is trying to steal daisy from him. Although Tom is a powerful rich man he is also a coward. He told George “The yellow car that I was driving this afternoon wasn't mine”(Fitzgerald, 140). There were many more ways for tom to give out the information, from turning it to the police or for waiting for george to ask him. Even though Tom offers George false information, eventually leading him to Gatsby's home, he is still less culpable than others. Tom's actions were unwarranted and could have been avoided. This is because his wife was the person who tempted Gatsby first.

After conducting a through investigation on the author of the Great Gatsby, Scott Fitzgerald, one may say that the protagonist of this novel is a very clore representation of the author, himself. There are numerous and meaningful similarities between Jay Gatsby and Scott Fitzgerald's life, and all of them are far from being coincidence.

Even though there are clear external differences between Jay Gatsby and George Wilson, there are also similarities between them. First off, both Gatsby and Wilson seek women that are romantically involved with Tom. Even though Wilson is already married to his woman, Gatsby goes on having an affair. They both want acceptance of these women and they both come from a very working-class background. They both want recognition of these women, and they both come from the background of the working class itself. Wilson is working for an honest life trying to stretch every dollar, Gatsby working illegally, regularly throwing away money.

Daisy sees this as does almost the exact same thing, only with Gatsby. By expressing this carelessness for each other, one can only begin to imagine the carelessness they have for other human beings. Tom treats Myrtle even worse than he treats Daisy, but Myrtle doesn’t seem to care, because she is mainly interested in his money. Tom doesn’t seem to worry about anyone but himself. In his own spite he ruins his life, as well as Daisy’s, Gatsby’s, and Myrtle’s. Daisy shows her carelessness during the time where Jordan, Tom, Daisy, Nick and Gatsby go to town. Her and Gatsby act like they are in love and make Tom incredibly jealous even though he is having his own affair. Tom accuses Gatsby of trying to start trouble in the Buchanan house, and they begin to fight. Daisy yells at Tom and tells him that she no longer loves him and is in love with Gatsby. Tom proceeds to tell everyone how Gatsby came across his money, and once Daisy finds out it was by illegal gambling and crime, she seems much less interested in him. Daisy appears to be more interested on what is on the outside of people, rather than the inside.

In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald focuses on Daisy Buchanan’s relationship with Tom Buchanan and Jay Gatsby. Tom and Gatsby both love Daisy in different ways, but the fact that they both want Daisy as their own makes them similar. Both Tom and Gatsby share many similarities while having even a greater amount of differences. While differences are good, they sometimes lead to unhappiness, jealousy, and grief.

He is racist, a hypocrite, an immoral cheater, a short-tempered brute and misogynistic.
