In emergency situations people act the way they do depending on how sever they think that the emergency is. For example if the emergency is really tragic then people could do irrational things because they are in shock or panicking. Also people usually panic and only think for their own survival not others in an emergency such as 9/11. People only want to get out of the building and away from the emergency because then they know that they are safe and not in harm’s way anymore. In the article Simplexity by Jeffery Kluger he points out how people can act like water particles in emergency situations. There are a few problems with the “human-beings-as-water-particles” idea because it is too tidy. The people don’t go at a simple and equal speed, they are all rushing towards the closest exit and trying to get away from the danger of what is going on. In the article people would be getting off one floor into the stairwell. In doing this it causes people to slow down and sometimes even stop further up the stairs. …show more content…

If people trip and fall then they could cause a backup by people stopping and trying to avoid them. Also it can cause other people to trip and create a giant pileup of people in the way slowing the evacuation process. This is dangerous for the people who tripped and the people trying to escape. It is dangerous for the people who tripped because they are on the ground and can get run over and get injured. It is dangerous for the people trying to escape because it could prevent them from escaping the building and could even cause them to not make
