Project Statement

Starbucks is the largest coffee house company in the world. They have over 16,000 stores in over 50 countries. We have one of their outlets in our university. We chose to carry out our simulation project on this particular store because it would be ideal to study a system which has a queue at any time during its working hours. It would also help the company in serving their customers more efficiently and
The model was ran for 2 hours for which the data was collected. It was noticed that this wasn’t representing the actual system.

After studying the system again and comparing it with the model, it was realized that the number waiting in queue was much larger than the number actually observed. It was realized that the data collection wasn’t done right with some flaws in the method of collecting the input data. Therefore, the data was collected again by first finding out from the establishment as to what time they are generally busy and have a large queue. It was found and observed that the time between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. was the busiest period during the weekdays. At times the queue at the bill counter would reach around 15 people and around five at the counter where the coffee would be given. This made us choose this period and conduct a simulation study at this period rather than the whole day.

The data collection was conducted and the time when the customer arrived, the time they reached the bill counter and the time they left the system were noted. The barista making and the serving the customer was also noted. This data collection lasted for a couple of hours. The data was then matched and was transferred to a data spreadsheet. In the spreadsheet the inter-arrival time, the service time at the bill counter and the service time for the baristas were calculated. It was noticed that there was not much difference between the times taken by each of the
