In The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the story revolves around the Puritan society. The Puritan society is a religion that doesn’t believe in having pleasure on Earth. The Puritan society also revolves around punishment. Nathaniel Hawthorne hates the Puritan society but is fascinated by how it works. His great uncle Hathorne was the only judge during the Salem witch trials who wouldn’t apologize for what he did. The Scarlet Letter was written in the 1800’s but takes place in the 1600’s. In his novel, The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses symbols of the scarlet letter, Pearl and Chillingworth to contribute to the theme of sin.

Hester Prynne is the wearer of the scarlet letter in this story. Hester Prynne committed adultery with Dimmesdale the clergyman of the town. They only got caught because Hester got pregnant with a baby. Hester, while being tried, refuses to give the name of the man she shares her sin with. Dimmesdale is the clergyman of the town, but because he hides his guilt he got sick and over time it gets worse. Hester Prynne had sewn the scarlet letter on her chest while in jail, but she did it so beautifully everyone in the town was even madder at her. While Hester Prynne walked from the prison doors to the scaffold everyone looked at her as if she were a new person. Hawthorne explains this as she’s walking. “… So that both men and women, who had been familiarly acquainted with Hester Prynne, were now impressed as if they beheld her for the first time was that scarlet letter…” (Hawthorne 51) This quote proves its connection to sin as more than some thread, but as making her a
