"Sing to the LORD, all the earth; proclaim his salvation day after day.
24Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.
25 For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods.
26 For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the LORD made the heavens." (I Chronicles 16:23-31)
Everybody these days has a convention. If you love comic books, fantasy, sci-fi there will be a comi-con gathering in a major city somewhere near you. And you can attend with several thousands of others and be as geeky as you want. You can even dress up as your favorite characters from movies and graphic novels. Believe it or no this is one of the attractions to attending one of these events. A word

Nobody meets like the United Methodists. From Ad council to charge conference to Annual conference to a world-wide general conference we are the "meetingist" group you'll ever meet. No superhero costumes, but plenty fo those donuts. I received a brochure in the mail the other day for a worship convention. Not a convention where we meet and actually worship (aka church) but an actual convention and expo about worship. I counted a list of close to 200 displays on the floor. Everything from chairs to live streaming technology to sound and speakers. Software and video lights and temperature control. Keynote speakers on innovative and high tech worship as well as worship directors and worship leaders. I had a couple of thoughts as I leafed through the brochure. One was I wonder if when people attend these things do they dress up as their favorite worship leaders? People dressed up like Hillsong? Wearing cool hats like some in the band Rend Collective? Instead of spandex a bunch of clergy wedged into their skinny jeans and fake retro glasses, slightly mussed hair to look like worship leaders or famous preachers? One guy being ironic wearing a Brooks Brother Suit coming as Billy …show more content…
Please understand I like all the innovation. I love the technology. I helped pioneer an extensive online worhip at one church I pastored. And to be honest I probably love contemporary worship a bit more than I do traditional. And truth be told If it were closer, and I had the time I wouldn't mind attending and seeingall they have to offer. My wife would probably make me leave the skinny jeans at home (again you can't unsee things) but I wouldn't mind attending. At the same time, as I said I wonder if in our attempt to make worship bigger, faster and stronger if we're in danger of losing the point. The focus of our worship ought never be ourselves. Or what we enjoy or what we "get out of the service" worship is supposed to be about our gathering together and honoring God . Lifting HIm up. Giving Him praise. It's about resetting our lives that tend to get out of
Discussed about Fellowship Hall. Melissa Bailey is going to make the worship atmosphere more welcoming by bringing some lights.
Oil spills are a major problem in america, but the government doesn’t want you to know that. Just like how they didn’t want you to know that “People that worked on the 2010 oil spill cleanup have reported eye, nose, and throat problems, blood in the urine, seizures, vomiting, nausea, respiratory issues, skin problems, liver and kidney problems, nervous system damage, miscarriages, and other health problems.”(SoftSchools). Now imagine what will happen to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe once their drinking water becomes toxic after putting in the Dakota Access pipeline. Although Trump and the big banks are supporting the Dakota Access Pipeline, activists like the Native Americans and stars like Shailene Woodley are standing up for what is right, such as clean water and peace.
The Church hosts a multitude of activities to promote interconnectivity in the community. Aside from Sunday sermons, the church also holds weekly Wednesday bible study groups, church hoedowns, and a monthly potluck breakfast for the church's most
Rochelle Vann, I generally agree with your assessment of how many churches have “commercialized” their worship services in an attempt to fill the pews. I wonder how much of this is simply due to the fact that the church – in many places - has conformed to the culture rather than the church impacting the culture? Pettit (2008) says that “Since salvation is holistic, one possibly obvious implication of the spiritual formation process is that the believer's life should ultimately affect the culture” (p. 48).
Preparing for the event was very nerve-racking and I felt extremely anxious and apprehensive. The church attendance was all African Americans and mostly low-income with a mix of young and old. The church itself is very old, established in 1787, and sits in one of Carbondale’s poorer neighborhoods. I have been to this church before though, for work purposes to do a homeless count at the soup kitchen, so I was a little familiar with the church in general. Based on the soup kitchen experience the attendance of people in the church was pretty much as expected.
Milton Reid was New Hope Baptist Church’s first full time pastor. Before Rev. Reid came to New Hope’s the pastor only served on the second and fourth Sunday. Our communion was held on the second Sunday. Rev. Reid changed the communion to the first Sunday and rearranged the choir. He gave the Senior Choir the first and third Sunday and the Junior Choir the second and fourth Sunday. My mother made robes for the choir and even embroidered names in them to prevent any mix-ups. She also ordered sheet music for us from the Theodore Presser Company in Chicago, Illinois. At the time there were no available places in the area to purchase sheet music. These things were done by the “Grace of God” and at no expense to the church. We had rehearsal every Monday night. The memories are pleasant even though for many years during the winter months there was no automatic heat. I would go to the church ahead of time to make a fire. Most of the time my father would help me, and sometime I was on my own. I would make sure the fire would burn before going back home then return later for rehearsal if it was not warm when the choir members came in they would gather around the potbellied stove and I was up front on the piano with my coat on. By the time the church really got good and warm, it was time to
I am part of Grace Covenant Church, which is part of an organization called, Every Nation. Every Nation has churches in Asia, Africa, Europe, Oceania, and America. Some folkways that I practice are going to church every Sunday and talking about the message with my family afterwards. For me, church has never been about meeting with people who think like me, it was my time to spend with God. I always preferred one on one time with God, rather than group discussion. Our church holds yearly mission trips, and frequently holds
On Remembrance Day 1998, St Timothy's hosted a community worship service for dozens of local legionnaires, police officers, boy scouts, and girl-guides. Tension filled the room as the elderly congregation scrambled to welcome such a large and diverse group of people. Obviously, the sudden presence of so many young guests was already beginning to disturb several of the parish's long-standing assumptions about Anglican worship; and thereby, unsettle the parish's equilibrium. For instance, the churchwardens had always flatly maintained, “Organ music best serves potential visitors”; however, the Remembrance Day service emphatically exposed their folly as well as an assortment of other related beliefs. Simply mingling with so many children and young
“Worship is the believer’s response of all that they are - mind, emotions, will, body - to what God is and says and does.” Warren Wiersbe
Comic Cons are conventions targeting a fan base of comic book, science fiction and fantasy literature enthusiasts. Cons, as they’re known by loyal fans, contain elements of a trade show and have grown in popularity since their inception in the early 1970s. In the beginning, comic book conventions and science fiction conventions, for the most part, remained independent of one another. In the last decade, however, they’ve fused to form international mega-conventions, in which crowds in the hundreds of thousands flock to a single event. What started out as a collector’s paradise, drawing masses looking to buy, sell and trade their most prized possessions with like-minded individuals, Cons have turned into trendy, pop-culture meccas and redefined how society looks at nerds.
a prayer that lasted about five minutes. Then a hymnal that we all have to sing
Dr. Ouellette always asks how our trip was, so this time, we tell him about the convention. He seems surprised when we say we had over 4,500 people in attendance! Later, I chide myself because I didn't think to give him a jw.org card. I'll have to keep this in mind for next time.
Having grown up in the church, I was taught from a young age about the miracles Jesus performed. When attending a Sunday service I have come to expect worship,
To experience a new religion is eye opening to me and was very interesting to visit and collaborate with people who attended the service as part of their lifestyle. First of all, I am Native American and I see that my Navajo traditions and worshiping services has a unique and precise way of worshiping. Considering I was raised as a Southern Baptist throughout my childhood of going to Bible camp and youth camps which has gotten me to see that it was the only right way of worshiping and seeing other religions idolizing other physical pagans which I saw this as wrong. However, this course was a way to be openminded about other cultures besides my own christian background. As this course concludes, I fine myself seeing the core roots set back in centuries of all religion of having similar foundations in all aspects of their history.
Is there some value in the pray meeting? People suggest this idea because of their absence of many these meetings. Hey! Many people sing "I like to be in your home celebrating with thy people...” and even jumping and dance in the "spirit" singing this contemporary, anthem. This is why I say that people lie, because when they are invited to the pray meeting they like to sing "I like to be in my house...". Seem to say that that, does not have any value that these meetings belongs to the "past" generations. But God has other plans...
