Often in sermons pastors persuade their audience to behave in a spiritual or moral fashion. For example, as used in Jonathan Edwards “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” where he goes on to express how sinners should repent and live happily or continue to sin and live in destruction forever. Edwards wanted to convince his audience by appealing to their fears, pity, and vanity. Edward had a strong impact on his audience because of his use of incensed tone, vivid imagery, and his use of figurative language. Foremost Edward had a strong use of incense tongue that give a strong impact on his audience. For example, in paragraph 6 he was going on to explain God's wrath with the sinners. He says “everlasting destruction”.

For example, in paragraph 11 he says “the door of mercy wide open”. This also reveals the rich figurative language because it personifies the door as a way of saying we're giving you a second chance to do better. This further demonstrates the author's anger while simultaneously giving them the opportunity to redeem themselves. A second example would be in paragraph 6 when he says “this moment followed up an everlasting destruction”. This suggests his frustration by personifying the moment giving you the extent of the situation. In conclusion, Edwards rich use of figurative language gives off a strong impact. In essence, it is clear that Edwards had a strong impact on his audience because of his incensed tone, vivid imagery, and his use of rich figurative language. He also appeals to the audience through vanity, fear, and pity. He appeals through fear by showing God's power to remove the sinner. He appeals through vanity by showing them God's wrath about the sinners sin. He appeals through pity by making the sinner feel sorry for themselves.
