Sit Down And Play (SDP)

For the classroom observation assignment I was able to observe at Stepping Stones Family Childcare and Preschool Program. I conducted observations for five hours each on the dates of September 24th and September 25th of the year 2015. This licensed home-based daycare and preschool program is located in a quiet suburban neighborhood on 4103 Bryant Street, Blasdell, New York. The facility allows for a twelve-child capacity (ages 6 weeks to 12 years with four additional school age) and is owned and founded by Kim Bannister. When I observed, there were two additional staff present. Therefore, there were a total of 3 adults and 12 children at the center when I observed. New York State Senator Marc C. Panepinto was also present on September 25th as he read to the children and toured the home. I chose this specific setting as I personally thought it would be an interesting dynamic to study how a home-based preschool program is run.

A childcare provider is someone who helps the children in their community grow and develop at the appropriate stages by age. Some children spend more time at preschool than at home, and with teachers surrounding them they can be nourished, properly fed, appropriately educated as well as allowed to play and explore. Jennifer Patterson is the ECE Child Care Labs Coordinator for The College of Southern Idaho. She oversees the activities planned for the children, organizes the funding, and most importantly, makes sure that her centers are a safe place to go for each and every child enrolled. The discourse community aspect in every part of childcare is as complicated and simple as it sounds.

I give the children the opportunity to socially interact with each other. I develop positive and secure relationships with each child. Children often participate in activities that require teamwork. I meet children’s social and emotional needs by talking and nurturing them. I tend to validate a child’s progress throughout the day. I read them books and have finger plays & flannel board activities available. I try and help

The key to attain this solid foundation is through communicating effectively and clearly with the adults associated with the play setting. For example, it is important that parents and carers are aware of any issues that may have arisen during the session, any difficulties their child is encountering, or if their child has behaved or responded particularly well to a certain situation. Essentially, this involves being ‘updated’ on their child’s general behaviour and well-being. The importance of clear communication can be evidenced here. Being vague in ones communications can lead to problems such as misunderstanding, the child being reprimanded for something they didn’t do by parents, or by parents not grasping the full extent of the problem. Not only would this affect the support the child would receive, but many could argue that such misinterpretations or misunderstandings could result in conflict between play setting and parent.

Evaluating the Center For Young Children Day care (CFYC) in UMD, I have to say I am happy that there are a lot of programs to help kids grow up to be healthy. This is the time where children need to explore and and mae discovery in their little adventure.Though the synaptogenesis of the brain have diminished, the production of the Prefrontal cortex is still being developed (L. Levine, J. Munsch Children's Development from infancy to Adolescence, page 261). There are unique activities that help each child develop skill. The CFYC has a card game where they gather children together and do what the card says. One of these card is an “exercise card” in which the adult and children do that exercise. All members of the staff must act as professionals while at work, especially with young children. The administrative and teaching staff must work together to ensure their practices are developmentally appropriate, and share new and/or creative ideas with one another. It is also the responsibility of a teacher to establish an open, trusting relationship with the parents of each children in their care. Thus, parents can freely communicate their thoughts, concerns, and/or suggestions about their child or the program. Parent satisfaction is something that every child care or development center should strive for.

Children's work is their play, and it is vital that adults childminders support and extend children's play experiences effectively.

In this program our child care providers have a hands-on interaction with the children. They guide our early learners through child directed play. The child care staff provides different learning opportunities by supplying an array of activities based on the children’s interests. This program will allow the children an opportunity to become leaders in their learning, by exploring and discovering their play environment on their own, with peers and through guidance from the staff. My first goal during the child life internship is to successfully gain a working knowledge of the philosophy and principles of patient-and family-centered care. Although I have some valuable experiences working with children and families, I believe that the setting, environment, and resources at Advocate Children’s Hospital will help me to further develop skills and knowledge in working with families in times of crisis and high stress. I want to gain a solid understanding of family dynamics, stress reduction and developmental, educational, and therapeutic play techniques. My second goal is to evaluate my own work under the guidance of experienced professionals, and be measured by professional standards. As a graduate student in child life, I have set forth to gain knowledge of developmental and educational theories, role-play various preparations with classmates, and volunteer for child life events; thus the next step is to gain clinical preparation and put what I have learned in class to practice. Hence, I am eager to invest in opportunities to build on coursework and apply theory under the guidance of experienced individuals to acquire skills in the profession. My third goal, but not my last goal, is to strengthen my ability to interact and communicate with other members of the health care team to integrate child life into the care plan. My experiences working with children officially began in 2012 when I started working for One of A Kind Progressive Early Education. I worked with children of all ages, primarily toddlers and preschoolers. While working at One of A Kind, I assisted the lead teachers as much as possible. I helped develop daily routines of activities, lesson plans, nap, and toilet-training times that seemed most effective for the students. I worked with parents during pick up and drop off times to make sure they were happy with the schedule and care their child was receiving. I was in charge of maintaining a safe environment for the students at One of A Kind.

This school is a licensed childcare program and NAEYC accelerated. The center is providing child care program for children age from 2.9 to 5 years old. There is 2 preschool classroom, I did my observation in preschool classroom room no: 1 on 10/2/2017 time from 9am to 10am. There are around 13 children in the classroom.
