Six Events That Led To The Rise Of Nationalism

Manifest destiny and westward expansion was a tremendous key component to the growth of the nation economically because of the impact it had on native americans, women empowerment, and expanding the population of the country.

Nationalism was formed with the idea that a nation is made up of people who are joined together by common language, customs, cultures and history. It held the belief that one should be loyal to the people of their nation, not a king or empire. Nationalists believed that people of a single nationality should unite under a single government. The concept of Nationalism emerged in the French Revolution and was spread to the rest of Europe by Napoleon’s conquests.

Manifest destiny was a 19th century concept that the expansion across North America was destined to happen. It influenced the government to expand westward which led to problems with the natives and thence led to the U.S- Mexican War. It was debated by many whether or not slavery should be allowed in the new territories so the democratic party split in two.

The idea of manifest destiny changed the American landscape majorly. The manifest destiny helped America gain the status as a true nation in the world community and encouraged people to believe that the country was destined to grow. In the 19th century the settlers in America believed they had a mandate from God to expand west, this is called the Manifest Destiny. This expansion would involve not merely territorial aggrandizement, but the progress of liberty and individual economic opportunity as well. The Manifest Destiny shaped America throughout the years. Three main things that revolve around the Manifest Destiny are the moon race with Russia, western expansion, and how we found more resources and advancements in technology.

Manifest Destiny means clear or obvious future or fate, therefore; the United States believed that it was their Manifest Destiny to expand Westward and to gain more land, this is how they came to war with Mexico. The expansion westward/ Manifest Destiny would change their standings economically, socially, and geographically. It changed them economically by making them money by working different jobs, mainly in factories, it changed them socially by having different views than Mexico; which made them develop new laws, and government it changed them geographically because of more and more land was being farmed, factories being built.

People move to the west because there were opportunities of mining for gold and more farmland but there wouldn’t be those opportunities without the Manifest Destiny. Although farming brought more inventions which expanded the way people farmed and mass produce food, and also the mining of gold made people think that they were going to become rich which moved them farther west to settle, it was all because of the Manifest Destiny. The Manifest Destiny gave people the idea that they were the greatest and that it was there responsibility to expand their country. The Manifest Destiny was supported because it gave people the idea that if they had more land then they were powerful.

The Manifest Destiny was the attitude prevalent during the 19th century period of American expansion that the United States not only could, but was destined to, stretch from coast to coast. Manifest Destiny was mainly accomplished by the Monroe Doctrine, the annexation of Texas, and the Mexican-American War, but we were not a true continental power yet. After 1850, the Civil War, westward expansion, and the rise of big business made the United States a true continental power.

Manifest Destiny pushed America into a new, positive light. Economics, along with the government and social classes were affected by Manifest Destiny.

The new inventions allowed for the belief of Manifest Destiny to fill the heads of Americans. Manifest Destiny was a phrase used by leaders and politicians in the 1840s to explain continental expansion by the United States that revitalized a sense of "mission" or national destiny for Americans. (PBS Organization n.d.) This idea established a great deal of Nationalism within the Americans. It created the feeling that, together, Americans would expand and build up America out West.

Manifest Destiny was a mindset that played a crucial role in the expansion of the United States, and if it had not been thought of, America would not be the way we know it today in regards to how big it is. In this essay, I will discuss how it helped shape America, how it began, how it would affect events that happened later on in American history as a result, and how it led to making America what it is today.

Nationalism is how one feels toward their nation. Therefore nationalism determines how strong a nation is, by the unity of the people. America was very young as a nation in the early to mid 1800s and was not meeting the standards of the people. Changes needed to be made.
