Indeed, water is an essential component in the industrial, agricultural, transport, among other economic and social sectors. However, a research done by UNICEF(2012) states that “Over 780 million people are still without access to improved sources of drinking water and 2.5 billion lack improved sanitation.“ The majority of this population is residing in the arid areas, which account for a third of the total global mass. The underground water is readily available if efficient systems are created. One of such is through sinking boreholes. This is a common method of accessing clean and safe water in different arid areas globally. Similar to the recycling of wastewater, drilling of boreholes is only expensive in the short-run when putting the right systems in place. The costs of running and maintenance are relatively small. As such, it is a viable method of accessing water in the arid area where the income levels are relatively low. It is also noteworthy that drilled water is safe for human consumption without necessarily undergoing the purification process. This further eliminates the costs of accessing ground water. The boreholes can also be sunk almost everywhere as long as the surrounding environment is safe and free from contamination. (For example, a well should be sunk far from pit latrines and oilrigs to avoid water contamination.) Despite being an ideal and viable approach to accessing water in arid areas, boreholes are exposed to several challenges that should be considered during the feasibility tests.
