I. Introduction
A. The most common type of cancer in the United States is Non-melanoma skin cancer.
i. Credibility Statement: In fact, the American Academy of Dermatology believes one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.
ii. Central Idea/Theme/Thesis: I want to show you how you can beat those odds and not be affected by this condition.
iii. Preview: The most important thing you can do is know about the most common type of skin cancer, the warning signs, and how to prevent it.
TRANSITION STATEMENT or Internal Summary: Nearly 5 million people are treated for skin cancer annually (Skin Cancer Facts).
II. Body
A. The most common form of skin cancer is Basal cell Carcinoma. In 2010 the Skin Cancer Foundation estimated that there were approximately 2.8 million cases of Basal Cell Carcinoma in the US. These numbers has continued to increase steadily.

Many of you are probably wondering what Basal Cell carcinoma even is. Well, “BCCs are abnormal, uncontrolled growths or lesions that arise in the skin’s basal cells, which line the deepest layer of the epidermis”(Basal Cell Carcinoma - Causes and Risk Factors). It is more than likely that Basal cell carcinomas will reoccur in the same place where they were found, even after being successfully treated. If your family has a history of skin cancer or basal cell carcinomas, this will increase the chance of you developing other types of skin cancer, such as squamous cell carcinoma or, the more aggressive, melanoma.
ii. This specific type of skin cancer usually develops on skin that gets prolonged sun exposure, such as on the head, neck, and back of the hands. BCC is also especially common on the face, specifically the nose (Skin Cancer Foundation).
iii. Now, anyone with a history of sun exposure can develop this condition. However, people who use tanning beds, have faire skin, or green or blue eyes have a much higher risk of getting BCC (Mayo Clinic
Discuss the different types of skin cancer, risk factors, diagnosis, treatment options and preventative measures.
Specific Purpose: After listening to my speech the audience will know what skin cancer is, what the three most common forms are, what the risk factors are, and some preventative measures that can be taken to lessen the risk.
Although there are several types of skin cancer, the most aggressive form is melanoma. This cancer of the skin involves mass replication of the pigment producing melanocyte cells, which are located in the epidermis, below the basal layer. There are several factors involved with the onset of melanoma including, exposure to ultraviolet rays, genetic predisposition, numerous nevi (moles), immunosuppression, and environmental exposure to carcinogens.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma – Accounts for 20% of non-melanoma cancers and causes death in about 10% of affected patients.
There are different types of skin cell cancer. Bell cell carcinoma (BCC) involves slow growing, malignant epidermal tumors that develop from hair follicles. These tumor infiltrate surrounding tissues and invasively destroy vulnerable areas, such as skin that is chronically exposed to the sun. The sun-exposed areas of the neck and head are at highest risk, where small white or translucent lesions will likely appear. Squamous cell carcinoma is a cancer that is caused by too much UV exposure or from excessive use of sunbeds. It is technically caused by uncontrolled growth of abnormal squamous cells and medically treated through safe dermatology
Skin Cancer is the abnormal division of skin cells which cause tumors in the body. There are 3 types of Skin Cancer: Melanoma, Basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma (Web Md, year). Skin cancer is caused by the exposure of ultraviolet radiation and UV-like factors (Skin Cancer Foundation, 2015). This paper focuses on a specific type of skin cancer called Melanoma.
Skin cancer is a condition where cancerous cells form in the epidermis. The epidermis is the first layer of your skin. Melanoma can be on any part of the body (Egan 23-24). This form of skin cancer can be treated in the early stages of formation. Basal cell cancer is one of the most common types of skin cancer, this cancer may also happen on the sun exposed skin and on the face (Egan 10).Squamous cells are the second most common form of skin cancer. Squamous cells form on sun exposed skin (Egan 11). For example, it could potentially form on the shoulders, neck, or hands (Egan 10-11). Each stage of skin cancer may vary depending on the person.
Skin Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of not normal skin cells. It mostly occurs when you in the sun to long or you have to much Ultraviolet Radiation from the sun and tanning beds etc. This will trigger mutations and genetic deflects. Which leads the skin cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumers. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the united states of america. One out of every 5 Americans will get skin cancer in the course of their lifetime. throughout the years they find a new type of skin cancer.
"The rates of skin cancer have expanded consistently since the 1920s uncovers the risk of the American fixation on getting a "solid" tan. Skin tumor is an infection where growth (harmful) cells are found on the external layer of the skin (epidermis). The three sorts of cells found in the epidermis are squamous cells, basal cells, and melanocytes. These cells in time develop to be carcinogenic. Consequently, the three sorts of skin tumors are squamous cell, basal cell, and melanoma. Melanoma is the deadliest and dangerous kind of growth. The quantity of individuals with melanoma has ascended in Scotland from 3.5 in 1979 to 10.6 for each 100,000 in 1998 for men and 7.0 to 13.1 for ladies. (Mill operator 945) Squamous cell and Basal cell skin
In the United States, more cases of skin cancer have been diagnosed than any other type. It is estimated that about 2 million of these cases arise every year, and can be prevented significantly from utilizing sun protection.
It is believed that the amount of exposure of the skin to the sun before the age of 20 is actually the determining risk factor for melanoma. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common skin cancer and tends to only spread locally. Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common skin cancer, and it can spread to other parts of the body, although not as commonly as melanoma. The risk of getting basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma is determined by a person 's lifetime exposure to UV radiation and the person 's pigment protection.
An estimated 2.8 million cases of BCC were diagnosed in the U.S. and rates continue to grow. In fact, it is the most frequent diagnosed of all cancers, being responsible for the majority of all diagnosed skin cancers. Although it is very common it is also fairly easy to treat if treated early, because BCC almost never spreads from where the original tumor was found. Basal Cell Carcinoma commonly looks like an open sore, red patches or scars and can sometimes resemble skin conditions such as eczema which is why it is important to get them checked out by a physician as soon as they are noticed. People with fair skin are the most common to be diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, because lighter skin tends to be predisposed to skin damage like being sun burnt. Although skin color is a factor, the largest contributing factor is the intensity and extended exposure to the sun. Which is why BCC is most commonly found in places exposed to the sun, the face being the most common place to find the skin
According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most common cancer, accounting for about half of all cancers in the United States. More than 3 million cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in the United States alone this year (Skin Cancer Foundation). Basal-cell carcinomas constitute approximately 90 percent of all non-melanoma skin cancers, making it the most common cancer in humans. Basal-cell carcinomas or BCCs are abnormal, uncontrolled growths or lesions that arise in the skin’s basal cells, which line the deepest layer of the epidermis. This type of cancer most often occurs in skin that is frequently exposed to sunlight or other ultraviolet radiation such as the face, ears, neck and limbs (Rubin et al.). As ultraviolet rays
The scariest fact found when researching the effects of exposure to the sun’s harmful rays is that ninety present of skin cancer is caused by it. Doesn’t knowing the facts make you want to shield yourself and your children by never going outside again? Unfortunately, that is just imposable but educating our youth is the first step to prevention since most sun exposure is achieved before the age of eighteen. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, one out of every five American’s will develop skin cancer. The three main types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and malignant melanoma. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common
Thesis: Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States but is highly curable if detected early and treated properly.
