To write a good mystery novel takes time and only a few authors have been successful in writing them. Mystery novels has been around for a period of time with historical authors such as Arthur Conan Doyle and recent author Stephen King. In these novels, clues are provided by the author and Christopher Boone, narrator of the novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, states, “If it is a good puzzle you can sometimes work out the answer before the end of the book” (5). In relation to this, the most valuable information is typically gained throughout the process of the investigation rather than the solution itself. Although the book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time is not classified as a detective story, the plot still goes through an investigation and shares elements of a mystery novel. The mystery within the story that keeps the novel going is to find the killer of Mrs. Shears’ poodle, Wellington, and in turn, shapes the ending where the audience sees the development of the protagonist, Christopher, through the investigation itself, the journey to London and his overall ability as a writer.
The God Complex, something strongly touched on in “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” is very straightforward to the main character “Christopher”. The book revolves around Christopher and his day-to-day mystery solving. Throughout the book you see hints at how Christopher struggles in believing in a god. This could reflect his black and white morals, he shows throughout the book. The God Complex is a challenging and touchy subject; however, this book puts it into an interesting situation.
I go with Froggy and we chill on his couch drinking Dr. Pepper. We talk about how Celia asked me to the dance and how I gotta pick her up early to go. “Ok.” We headed to the court to play some basketball. We played horse and one vs one. I always beat Outie and I knew if I lost I would never hear the end of it. I needed to score this possession or he won, I took the shot and I missed I lost by one. When we were on the way home he kept talking about how he beat me and how much better he is than me.
Have you ever felt misunderstood or isolated from the people around you, just because you’re different from them? In Mark Haddon’s “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time”, the main character and protagonist, Christopher Boone, is a 15 year old boy who struggles to cope with the effects of Autism. Although Mark Haddon never directly expresses that Christopher has autism, it is very easy to realize that Christopher is different than most people. And because of that, and through Christopher’s self-narration, readers are quick to realize that he struggles with Autism. When a person has Asperger’s Syndrome their skills are different than people without Asperger’s Syndrome. In the novel, Christopher Boone is accurately portrayed as someone with Asperger’s Syndrome by him having social impairments such as repetitive routines, trouble with social interactions and socially inappropriate behavior, and always feeling the need to have a logical reasoning and explanation for the events in his life. This is often is found in people with autism (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke). Other reasonings to prove that Christopher has Autism include, the need for trust and the inability of showing emotion.
" Hey, Slutt Puppy, did you see those kids back here along the barbed-wire fence?". He said they were yelling as he passed by. I asked him what they were yelling and he said: " Daaaaady Daaaaady ". The yellow freight driver shut up, and everyone else that heard this clowning kept laughing. Then, in what appeared to be a voice way off in the background, kept calling me. I go, " who yelling at me ", and the voice said " Me, Rodknocker. I left you in El Paso five days ago and you had them stirred up down there after they got some racial stuff started! " He told me that when I was born, I must of been dropped on my head. I said " No, I fell off the shelf".......................
Experiencing severe neglect in the early years of life can be traumatizing for a child. In fact, Osofsky and Lieberman (2011) state that “children in the first five years of life are the most vulnerable to traumatic death and injury as the result of interpersonal violence, neglect, and accidents” (p. 120). This is the premise of the chapter “The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog”, from Dr. Perry’s novel of the same title. Dr. Bruce Perry is an American author and psychiatrist with extensive experience working with young individuals. In this chapter, the psychiatrist retells his encounter with a 6 year old boy who had been neglected during the first few years of his life. He narrates his first encounter with

I watch, I listen, I learn. I have lived for hundreds of years and will continue to do so for many more to come. I have watched lovers marry, beloved children die, and even watched the making of new life in all of its wonderful ways. The people that surround me know nothing of me or my history. They do not know that in my life time I have had over three hundred robins make their homes on me. That I have been struck by lightning once and have survived the ordeal. They do not even know that I watched them as they tore down my brothers and sisters to make room for their roads and houses, which have become abandoned and long forgotten by the people that live here.
“I don’t feel good,” exclaimed the auburned haired girl with the tomboy look and ragged denim jacket. “I don't feel good at all. Where is my dog anyways? He should have been home half an hour ago” She looked around to hopefully find a trace of where her speckled, droopy eared beagle went and then she saw it, a huge contraption about a foot and half taller than ten feet. She ran to PawPaw and said in excitement “what is that huge thing in the barn?”
