Its purpose is to lower the barriers that many people have to communication through the use of IP technology. With a device that is connected to the Internet, colleagues, friends, and families are able to talk to one another. They can chat with voice, video, and messaging services, and it does not cost them anything at all. If they want to pay a (very low) fee, they can also call mobile phones and landlines throughout the world. There are very few places where they cannot get access through Skype or where they would not be able to contact other phones. Now, Skype also has a group video option. More than two people can now Skype with one another, so they can have a "conference call" of sorts when they are apart. That can make a significant difference for a business or for a large family or group of friends who want to stay in touch. Skype is not without competition, however. Yahoo Messenger, Windows Live Messenger, and Vonage are all strong competitors that are also often used to talk with people via IP. In order to see Skype develop in the future, there are four main challenges that must be met. Security and privacy are essential, along with future development, technical knowledge, and complexity.
