A horse is an animal well known on farms, in Amish communities, used in sports and often kept as pets. Horses are considered free spirited animals that not only provide love and fun journeys, but are also put to work. Horses offer a strong structured body that can be used for travel, either riding on a horse’s back or using the horse to pull a carriage, leisure, emotional support and even entertainment. In America, horses are noble animals that have impressive senses and abilities. Horses have extraordinary balance, impressive flight or fight responses to predators and have a life span of 25-30 years, thus making a horse a longtime companion. This essay is not meant to judge other countries, but to make it known just what is happening to our horses that we love dearly. To get into detail, there is no humane way to slaughter these animals. Horses are skittish by nature making accurate pre-slaughter stunning difficult and result in the horse being tortured by enduring repeated blows, sometimes conscious dismemberment and rarely receive a quick and painless death (The Humane Society of the United States, 2017). The last domestic plant closed in 2007 and the USDA documented the slaughter pipeline’s abundance of cruelty violations and injuries to horses, including broken bones, bones protruding from their bodies, eyeballs hanging by a thread of skin and gaping wounds (The Humane Society of the United States, 2017). Thankfully, the plant was closed but we still have a problem with the export of horses for slaughter. One may argue, if there was a way to humanely slaughter a horse would you still be against horse meat? Yes. Horses are often seen as companions and are even used to assist mentally ill rehabilitations, almost like a dog. It is taboo in America to slaughter and eat dog meat because dogs are domesticated.
