Slavery was well established in fifteenth century Africa. The institution took two basic forms. The emerging Atlantic world linked not only peoples but also animals, plants, and germs from Europe, Africa, and the Americans in a Columbian exchange. The first Africans to be brought to North America in 1619. It is unclear whether the slaves came for unpaid labor or servant. Life as a slave meant endless work from sundown to sunrise. They were working six days a week and having food sometimes not suitable for an animal to eat. The slaves that work on the plantation lived in little shacks with dirt floor and little or no furniture. Slave that worked on large plantations had to worry about the cruel overseers. The overseer was to look out and make sure no slaves ran away and made sure that the slaves were working to their max. The overseers could be cruel at some times. The Civil War was the greatest, 3 million fought - 600,000 paid the ultimate price for freedom. The Civil War determined what kind of nation the US was going to be. The war was between the southern states and the northern states. The northern states what to get rid of slavery and the southern states want slavery to keep going. The confederate struck first at Fort Sumter. The Confederate was ran by Robert E. Lee, and The Union was ran by Ulysses S. Grant. The Confederate ended up surrendering when their President was captured. The Civil War effected society, President Lincoln declared all slaves in southern states liberated. The period of time after the Civil War is known as Reconstruction. During this difficult era, the Southern states were gradually admitted back into the Union and the areas destroyed during the war were rebuilt. When the slaves were freed they really weren’t
