Slave owners had many justifications for why holding people in bondage was acceptable. From the idea that African Americans were a lesser race who needed taking care of by white patriarchs to the economic justification, slave owners were always trying to find new ways to dispute those who disagreed with their choice to hold others in captivity. Every slave owner was trying to justify why slaves were being cruelly abused. Often, religion came into play, on both the slavery and anti-slavery sides of the debate. In an edition of the Charleston Mercury, a newspaper, it was said that both the Old and New Testament give permission to hold others as slaves. After Solomon arrives on a sugar cane plantation, his master, William Ford (Benedict Cumberbatch), gathers all the slaves to read scripture and deliver a sermon in which he quotes from Luke 17:2, “It were better for him that a millstone was hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea than that he should offend one of these little ones.” Another example of When Solomon is sold to Edwin Epps (Michael Fassbender), the oppressive owner of a cotton plantation, the commentary deepens. When he has a good harvest, Epps attributes it to “righteous living”; when the crops die, he claims it must be a “biblical plague” brought on by his slaves’ unrighteousness.
