India is a country in central Asia with a population of over 1.22 billion people making it the second most populous country in the world. Its high population is one of the factors that results in India having such a high poverty rate. In India today over 37% of the population live below the poverty line. The reality of such a statistic means that these people live in conditions unimaginable to people of the western world. In the film Slumdog Millionaire by director Danny Boyle deeper ideas associated with this poverty are developed including destiny, loyalty and how poverty frees us. Another visual cinematographic technique used the film Slumdog Millionaire used to develop the deeper idea of Loyalty is reverse chronology shots. Reverse chronology shots are when a sequence of camera shots are played in reverse chronological order. In the final scene of the film as Jamal touches the scar on Latika’s face reverse chronology shots are used to show time passing backwards through the times that Jamal has lost Latika and back to the scene at the train station, a scene shown as one of Jamal’s most important and favoured memories of Latika as it is a moment when they were safe and together. Through these reverse chronology shots the audience is able to see the loyalty Jamal and Latika felt towards each other and despite the fact that they were split up several times their loyalty brought them back together. “I knew I’d find you.” Editing techniques are techniques used in films to show a different perspective of a scene and include techniques such as flashbacks and montage.
