Small Group Communication Reflective Study

Communication isn’t just about talking. There are so many different elements to communicating in society. How a person gestures, the tone in an individual’s voice, an expression on a person’s face, how a person listens is all a part of communicating. As we all know, in order to communicate with one another we must be able to listen. I think in society people think that communication is all about speaking but in reality it is just a little piece to a bigger picture. In today’s society, listening seems to be a skill that is being neglected. Even though it is basically the first communication skill that we are exposed to, we have pushed it aside and chose speaking to dominate our lives. Researchers have discovered that fetuses can process incoming sounds during the last trimester of pregnancy, and that by 12 months children have learned sounds of and rules of their native language(Worthington, 3). This shows that children’s abilities to speak, read, write and reason are influenced highly by how well they are taught to listen. As parents we can all be teachers to our children so that they can grow up to be well-rounded communicators.

In my essay about critical communication reflections with a family member, I will be writing about the event that took place when I had this communication with second cousin at the funeral of his mother three years ago. I present a balanced paper that will discuss the effectiveness and breakdown of the communication that took place. I will specifically write about the cultural boundaries and societies norms that influenced and the lead to the breakdown of our communication, primary our extended family structure and lines of communication will be my main focus. In this essay, I intend to reflect on a situation I encountered during my first community placement I had the opportunity to develop my communication skills not just theoretically but also practically, facing a real life environment. My placement made me aware of the importance of interpersonal and communication skills which are very important in the delivery of care. Throughout my nursing career, I will be encouraged to develop reflective practice skills and become a reflective practitioner. Reflection refers to a series of steps that you may take to question and explore an experience with the aim of learning from it. I will discuss the importance of communication in order to maintain a therapeutic relationship.

Being an excellent listener is one of the best ways to become a good communicator. Throughout the group work, the author demonstrated great communication skills when listening to her team’s different ideas and then taking them on board to create the best results. Fellow team members will appreciate good listening skills, and so in return, it will have a positive impact to the group’s mood, and encouraging them to be confident to speak up and say their thoughts as they know their ideas are being listened too.

My small communications group consisted of Krista Davis, Duncan Craddock, and Brittany Dinkins. In this paper I will discuss my first impressions of the group, what group stage I think we are in, what I think of each individual, and final impressions of the group.

I share your communication issue and struggle when speaking in front of groups of people. I feel this is because as the author states “Face-to-face we receive many more signals than just speech” (2015, p.21). I feel that I become more focused on how my audience is reacting to my message, rather than just communicating my intended message. This is something I hope to gain the skills to overcome as we progress through this course.

First, I learned that I need further development or additional polishing in numerous facets of becoming an effective communicator, and these aspects are audience analysis and strategy, oral communication, team communication, and corporate communication. After completing the Communication Development Plan, I am beginning to learn how to analyze audiences and develop a thorough communication strategy efficiently. Also, I am learning how to deliver impromptu or planned presentations efficiently, and I am starting to become more comfortable and less hesitant in giving presentations. After analyzing the Communication Development Plan and through class assignments, I have become more creative and relaxed in the team situations. Additionally, I have gained insight on how to effortlessly communicate in a corporate environment, and that I can apply what I learned in this class to my workplace. Lastly, I gained valuable knowledge and insight that can aid my professional growth.

One type of communication is interpersonal, including in groups and face to face interactions. In every type of communication each person has both strengths and weaknesses. One of my strengths is I am good at starting conversations. On campus I work for SPiRiT, I work in the admissions office and help to give tours on weekdays and on event days on the weekends. Giving these tours I have to know how to talk to the students and their families. Also, when I am trying to befriend people if I want to I am good at finding conversation topics at picking up the conversation if it fades off. My communication skills have been a great asset to both my personal and work life. It has strengthened my ability to work in harmony with co-workers and in group settings. Although I communicate quite effectively I do find myself to be more quiet in large group settings and dislike public speaking. My recent position in community nursing required me to take on multiple roles as an educator and helped me work on my public speaking skills.

Effective group communications come in forms of verbal and non-verbal techniques. Essential parts of the entire group’s contribution are that the group contains full participating members, the group is diverse, and that the diversity is recognized and respected (Hartley, 1997). In the videos viewed, three were evaluated on the effective and ineffective communication skills of the participants and suggestions made on how they could improve. The videos are titled, “Planning a Playground”, “Helping Annie”, and "The Politics of Sociology.

Though technology has made it easier for communication across distance, I find that maintaining communication depends on one’s own dedication to stay in contact. Having lived in Massachusetts, Colorado, and lastly, Oklahoma, I have gained many friends across the country. I have unfortunately lost some of my friends’ contact information. Regardless, for the purposes of this project I chose to talk to two of my friends in Massachusetts.

In the three communications I’ve written, text,email,and letter to insurance company. All of them had a different approach. Each written text were different people and they all had different responses. The background of the text I wrote to my friend was, my best friend I had known for years and we text every single day. The background of my email I wrote to my dad was tolerant because I not as close to my dad but, also, I should share how’s my life is going to him. In the letter, I wrote to my insurance company, it was urgent because I needed to tell them something needed to be done. They all come together as one whole story told in a different perspective.
