Mental Health Group for Adolescent Boys

I. Abstract- brief statement summarizing concept and rationale for the group The small group that is being proposed is designed for adolescent boys, ages 13-17, who have been recently diagnosed with a mental illness. The focus of the treatment group is for the boys to come to accept their mental illness using the seven stages of death designed by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross. While in group, they will not only come to terms with their mental illness but also become comfortable expressing emotions they may be experiencing, as well as build self-esteem due to the stigma of mental illness. This agency specializes in treating children and adolescents with significant psychiatric illness and impairment in behavioral, cognitive, emotional, familial, and /or social functioning. The age range of the clients served is 6-21 years old. There services include experiential therapies, brain-based services, speech & language, occupational therapy, psychological testing, individual group and family therapies, and med management. The experiential therapies include: brain gym, equine therapy, animal assisted therapy, art therapy, recreational therapy, rhythmic drumming, yoga, and ropes course including climbing wall. The brain-based services include: EEG/QEEG assessment, EEG neurofeedback, cognitive enhancement software, alpha-stim/CES, auditory visual stimulation, and HeartMath. The speech and language program revolves around social and emotional communication. The last program that has a specialization is occupational therapy, specifying in sensory integration. The clientele that is served by Inner Harbour are youths up to age 21 who are eligible for Core State Contracted/Medicaid services and who have a psychiatric and/or substance abuse diagnosis. Clients and families who live in the community are offered clinical services as well as residents in the Inner Harbour RBWO (Room and Board and Overnight Watchful Oversight)
